So I went for my sig today! Got as far as the obligatory finger and it was so painful, she said think you need the sedation! She put the cannula in and that's it passed out nearly 😳 So this consultant chap comes in looks at my notes and symptoms then turns round and said he needs a full colonoscopy doing! Under heavy sedation as the pain was to much!

Has anyone else had an experience like this?

So went the reception.... can you make Thursday morning... I was like yes of course, then I dawned on me that would mean tomorrow is another prep day 😭😭!

Oh yuck, another prep day right after doing prep sounds awful! But hopefully it's all worthwhile and you can have the procedure with no pain. And if you've already done prep and haven't eaten, then you're essentially empty anyway, so I wouldn't imagine that you'd have to do full prep tomorrow. Remember, as long as you're going clear, you're done - that's what I've always been told. Going clear, yellowish liquid is okay, and flecks are okay, solids are not okay and cloudy output is not okay. So keep that in mind for tomorrow and hopefully you won't have to drink too much prep.

I had something sort of similar happen - I had a flexi sig and the sedation failed, so I was awake and talking the whole time (usually the sedation here is really good, it feels like you've had a nice nap and don't remember anything). There was no pain, fortunately, and I only remember bits and pieces - it felt like I was super drunk, very loopy. All I remember is, I wasn't wearing my glasses, and I was trying to see what was happening on the monitor, but without my glasses I couldn't see. So I kept drunkenly shouting, "I can't seeeeeeee!" and I think my GI told me to be quiet. :p After that experience, my GI said that I get to have full anesthesia for all future scopes. I suspect it's as much for his benefit as for mine! Hah.

Ok I shall look out for all those tomorrow but yes hopefully I don't need all of it!! Tries to eat clean this evening too, although the D has completely gone!

That sounds horrid but also scary lol.

I'm not sure if they put you under here in the U.K.

I'm guessing it's a liability thing here in the US, they don't want to get sued so they make sure you are either very heavily sedated or completely out with anesthesia. Or maybe it's just a money thing, they can charge the insurance companies more money for more sedation/anesthesia. Whatever the reason, they knock us out here!

It wasn't too horrid nor scary, as I said there was no pain and I only remember bits & pieces, and it's actually pretty funny in hindsight. My GI is very serious and stern, so for me to be loudly yelling at him that I can't see while he's got a scope up my backside, that's just ridiculous to me. :p I'm sure I really annoyed him, ha ha.

Hopefully they give you really good sedation on Thursday so that you're not yelling at your doctor as well. Good luck!

Hi Andy

Sorry to hear you have to do the prep again but as Cat says hopefully by doing a full scope, they can find out what is causing all your symptoms.

I've had a few scopes in the UK and I think the level of sedation is down to individual consultants. Like everything else with the NHS, you can ask to be fully sedated (or given anaesthetic) especially as it was so painful the other day.

Good luck for Thursday and getting some answers.

The NHS largely won't do proper knock-out sedation on cost grounds. In the US you seem to get better treatment than the UK if you can pay for it but far inferior treatment if you can't.

I had a colonoscopy and they used propofol, (heavy sedation) which you are knocked out, but only for a very short time , its quick and you don't feel the pain. You wake up quicker than with a general anaesthetic (I'm from the uk)

Thanks everyone, prep is all done I only need 75% off the prep as I was clear! I am absolutely done in now from not eating a proper meal since Saturday night!

Crohn's11 I shall see what they give me but I hope it's that 👍🏼

I've begged for anaesthesia or heavy sedation but been refused here in the East Midlands.

I'm in the North West UK and I had mine with midazolam, pethidine and gas & air. At the pre-op the nurse told me they will only do it under general anaesthetic if you seriously can't tolerate it otherwise, as the risk of perforation is higher when you are completely out. I was in quite a bit of pain at one point and gas and air was doing bugger all!

It could be a cost saving exercise, but I wonder if having the patient suddenly come around from sedation in pain makes the Dr extra careful? I can imagine if they are out for the count it might be more difficult to tell when they are being too forceful? Just a thought, it's probably only a tiny increase in risk but the NHS are so careful about these things that it might sometimes do more harm than good in the grand scheme of things.

Here in the states, all of my colonoscopies have been with propofol. I have had 7 of them. Like CAT, I once woke up during the procedure. I was without my glasses as well, but I am farsighted and I could see the monitor. I tried to watch. There was no pain. Finally I decided that I should tell them I was awake. I heard the Dr. say "Is he awake?" the nurse reached for my IV line and that was all I remember. At least I didn't yell at the doctor!

Haha, luckily I had my contacts in that day so I got quite a good view of my disaster of a Terminal ileum [emoji28]
