Fibre (that's how we spell it in Canada, eh)

(Caution - talk to a naturopath/doctor first blockages have happened!)

I want to tell everyone that is not already aware - fibre.

Fruit, vegetable and particularly (my favorite) psyllium husks - fibre is really good for the gut.

I am between meds at the moment but like many of us I've tried most. The least damaging most consistently effective treatment over the last couple decades or so has been psyllium husks. (And it is cheap. Get it bulk. I get about 3-4 months for about $30)

Obviously D and fibre are correlated BUT fibre can also BIND. If I do nothing I have very watery D - which leads to cracks and rawness as well as more leakage through the gut wall itself. Adding psyllium husks to my diet gives me FORMED BM's (yes that is capitalized because previously it was unheard of). It is also easier to "hold" than watery D.

Now some cautionary notes:

1. blockages have occurred - talk to a doctor to find out how to take psyllium husks (lots of water! before, with and after) start small.

2. it does not cure crohns and it has not decreased the number of bm's / day for me

caveat: if you just mix psyllium husks with water it tastes like soggy cardboard (add to food, mix with juice or make a smoothy).

Hi: LOVE the fish picture. Thanks for this post!

Since starting on Imuran, I have been able to start gradually increasing my fibre consumption again without dramatic negative effects -- I think it (along with the other nutrients in fruit and veg and whole grains) helps me feel more energetic. I used to include psyllium in my cooking, especially bread, but am not going to return to it until/unless I can handle other whole grains first. Have been eating rye and millet bread this week -- little bits at a time aren't too hard to handle (not perfect, but not bad).

I do have some fibre but having two resections, it can cause severe bloat and pain for me. I can eat oatmeal because it isnt a high fibre. I was also prone to obstructions so I know what I can and cannot do. I do have veggies but I steam them all, to keep most of the nutrients. Funny how we use Fibre, litre and centre different than other countries lol.
