First scope... UPDATE.

On the 12th I will be having a Sigmoidoscopy, my first scope of any kind, can anyone tell me what to expect for prep & the procedure etc. I don't want any surprises lol! Also if on time, I will be on my period during the prep & scope, is this an issue?? Cheers :)

I haven't been on my period for a scope but I wouldn't have thought it our be a problem. I had an enema for the sigmoidoscopy which was fine a nurse asks you if you want to do it yourself or if they will do it for you. With the enema I was expecitng buckets hanging from the ceiling with hoses coming out but its just a small bottle, i worried about that bit a lot the first time. I think even though it isn't nice it's best to let them do it so at lest you know it will be done right and then should only be done once. The procedure itself is a little uncomfortable but nothing bad. I hope everything goes well for you.

Chances are you will have some sort of prep. Could be a liquid you have to drink or an enema etc. Prep is usually the worst part as you will be making frequent trips to the bathroom. Wet wipes are a must. Here's a link that has info on both a colonoscopy and a sigmoidoscopy: http://www.cancer.org/healthy/findc...escriptions/faq-colonoscopy-and-sigmoidoscopy No being on your period is not an issue. Let us know how it goes. :D

I'm really worried about the prep, whenever I have bad D I get an extreme stinging/burning that reduces me to tears & usually lasts the day until D has calmed down :( I don't know what I can do to help this, except hot baths, I'm guessing that's what wet wipes are for?

See if you can get yourself some Calmoseptine as well as using the wet wipes (regular toilet paper feels like sandpaper). Hopefully they sell it at a regular drug store (ask the pharmacy counter if you can't find it). I've never used it yet but I've seen it mentioned on the forum a lot so its gotta work. :)

Calmoseptine works great. Actually smells kind of neat as well. (That's kind of weird I know but don't worry, I assure you I have never tasted it). Most likely they are going to "put you under" for this scope. Not sure what drugs they use for this in the UK. Here I've been given Versed. Once they get the IV in you they will give you a little something to take the edge off. The next thing you know you will be waking up in the recovery room and all will be okay. Best of luck and I hope you get nothing but good news.

I had my sigmoidoscopy yesterday. I wasn't sedated just given gas & air.. That bags of fun! Not! Lol. Anyway my sigmoid & descending colon appear normal but I have a tortuous colon which made the procedure difficult & also painful for me :( I now have to wait to go back & see my GI. I'm not quite sure what any of this means or what's going to happen next, anyone have any idea?
