Any suggestions on getting rid of that nasty taste while taking this drug, if there is any? I have been drinking water and tea all day with really no relief.

1000mg a day is my dose.

Drink some coke or gatorade. Normally I wouldn't suggest it but with flagyl drinking a few sips of coke can be the best thing to get rid of that flavor. Brushing teeth about after also helps, as well as mouthwash.

I haven't found ANYTHING to get rid of it. Brushed teeth, I held mouthwash in my mouth for 5 minutes, gum, food, drinks, it's still there. I don't get what people complain about pred being so distasteful, it's NOTHING compared to flagyl, there's no way I can get it down fast enough, it always starts disolving the nanosecond it hits my mouth and emanates the nastiest taste this side of thrush. :angry-banghead:

Milk doesn't get along with me, we used to have a "thing" though....

lactase enzymes are hit or miss too (for milk consumption)....

i find if you get a mouth full of whatever, coke works great then lean your head back and drop the meds in then swallow the taste doesn't have time to hit your tongue

I am not even just talking about when taking it, it lingers. It seems worse in the morning. I take my medicine, brush my teeth, go to bed and wake up with the worst taste in the morning from it.

I'll try that one Mark, oddly I haven't tried that yet...and yes, the lingering is horrid, that's what is the worst part, the taste is bad enough (I usually shudder from it, actually) but it just sticks around for hours on end, and I take it morning and night (two at night because I have to take 3 a day total, and I can sleep through the double dose easier than I can tolerate one whilst awake)

There's a chance this is what is helping me lately (with the Cipro) but sadly, it's not a maintenance solution, my high-dose Immuran is for that, so hopefully that is the one pulling the weight.

hey matt

ok the dose im taking is 375mg 3 times a day. idk if its that dosage or what but mine are in capsules!! no nasty melting or taste! soo maybe as your doc if he can do that for you? its a little over 1000mg that youre on, but maybe its not a big deal....im not sure.

ALSO im 99.9% sure that the nasty tasting ones are generic flagyl. if you ask you dr to specify "name brand only" or whatever term they use, it has a lifesaving blue coating on the pill :)
however, name brand gets pricey i think.....but if youve got good insurance it might not be too bad! (once i hit the deductible on my plan then all scripts are free and between mine and my dads meds, we hit it within the first month of the year lol.)

good luck i hope something works out!

To add to what kello said, I think there is even a difference among generic brands. I always got my scripts filled at the local Kroger pharmacy. The last time I got it filled at the hospital pharmacy and even though it was labeled as generic, the pills looked different and the taste was not nearly as bad. The tablets were not coated, and still yucky to swallow, but that awful lingering taste was a lot less. I agree with Kello's advice to ask your doc to specify non-generic, if possible. If not, maybe try calling around to different pharmacies and asking what brand generic they use and try one that is different from what you are currently using.

Well I know mine are Metronidazole 500 mg tablets (white ones with NO coating), so I've known it was generic, I never have taken another type, so didn't know there were others.

THANK YOU for pointing this thread out to me Kell!

I may try to coke thing, though we have pepsi in this house, so i will give that a shot. (too bad it says not to mix with alcohol -- I would have a real shot otherwise ;))

I got put on the same thing as Benson, Metronidazole 500 mg tablets. I'm sure my pharmacist gave me that generic brand because they are covered completely by my drug plan.

i went to the hosp yesterday with one of my worst flareups in months, so for 1 week I'm on 1500 mg of the Flagyl + 1500 mg of Cipro a day! YUCK!

Oops, make that 250 mg tablets (but 2 at a time). Same difference I guess

By the way, the coke/pepsi idea works like a charm, still get the aftertaste obviously but not when first swallowing it :)

For me, it's not the taste of the actual tablets, the drug itself seems to effect my tastebuds.
There is nothing I can do to get rid of the taste in my mouth. I've found this with other antibiotics as well, not just flagyl.

This is the best way I have found to take it. just like you would take a Goodys powder. The damn tablets start dissolving instantly just like Prednisone tabs.
