Starting Flagyl later today because fecal cal showed inflamation? How did your child handle it? Any tips?

The taste was Grace's biggest ordeal.
The taste is HORRID and I mean HORRID or at least it was two years ago.
Hers was a liquid.

Other than taste all was fine.

My daughter (10yo) has been on it for a couple of weeks, in pill form. She has had some loss of appetite, but that's about it.

I had heard bad things about Flagyl before we tried it the first time. But it worked great and no side effects. The tablets have a metal taste-but for our son- it didn't stay. He'd immediately chew a piece of gum or take a drink and the taste was gone. We've had it prescribed for an abscess, c diff, and once just for a flare

M took the pills and did not like them. One of the side effects is a bad (sort of metallic) taste in the mouth and it made her miserable. She was also nauseous, so she didn't while she was on it. She's been on it twice - once for cdiff and once for a flare. It worked well but she was VERY happy to be off it!

Some kids have no side effects though, I hope your daughter is one of them!

We've done Flagyl a few times for flares. Other than the initial bad taste we had no issues with it. It was most effective the first time around.

We just finished Flagyll in liquid form. Ditto what Farmwife said word for word. DD HATES the taste of it. Was finally taking her meds fine until we added it. It's a fight every time now. Hers is also mixed with a banana flavor. Other than that, no other issues.

My son did the tablets for 3 months. No side effects and the tablets didn't taste of anything. I made sure he had it after food.

My 13 yo just finished 8 weeks of flagyl without any complaints. It was the only pill he had to take twice a day so we are happy to not have to remember an evening dose.

My 13 yr old girl has been on it a few times, once on IV, the rest pill form. No side effects just a pain to remember the night pill. It didn't do anything for crohns symptoms when she had it by IV, the pills were c diff issues. Good luck.

Thanks guys - she had trouble getting the first pill down and it did leave a bad taste..but I had sour lifesavers ready to pop in, which helped. No trouble this morning with swallowing or the taste. Now I just hope it doesn't cause nausea or other side effects - swim team and soccer practice today.

Yes -- something sour is the best way to get rid of the taste. Both my kids had to take Flagyl at one time or another, and both detested it. And they were lucky not to get the persistent metallic taste, the way some people do.

A sour sorbet works well because it is both sour and cold. My son liked a sour passionfruit sorbet that we weren't able to find anymore, by the time my daughter had to take the Flagyl. She used Edy's sour lime popsicles.

A rare but serious side effect of Flagyl is a tingling or numbness in the fingers and toes. Keep alert for that one, and let your doctor know immediately, and don't give her another dose until you discuss it with the doctor.

In my son's case I never tell him the side effects. You probably don't either;) If I told my son it may cause nausea... he might have that! That's his big weakness/fear.. Nausea.

I agree, never set them up to know about side effects. These days, though, kids can look them up for themselves!

My daughter's biggest fear is probably a common one -- fear of throwing up at school.

She had no trouble taking them...we are done with our two week course, but don't know yet if it has helped anything.
