Curious to hear from others on whether you take a food based or synthetic multi vitamin? I was on synthetic and just switched to food based because it probably is healthier but the question is why are the vitamin amounts so much lower?

I take food based multi vitamins and do not have the problems I had with a synthetic multi vitamin. I would get highly nauseous, constipated, or vomit with the synthetic. Never realized it was the vitamins, until I changed to food based and no longer experienced those symptoms! I never looked at the percentages compared to synthetic, but have been told the absorption is higher than synthetic.

What I try to do is obtain most of my vitamins through eating a healthy diet. Those that are tougher to obtain such as vitamins D3, vitamin k2, iodine, fish oil, I'll supplement.

A synthetic multivitamin tends to make me feel awful for the day.

Ideally we obtain from food but with our disease and malabsorption I think every CD patient should be on a basic multi.

I wonder though if food based vitamins may aggravate the stomach. Is there fiber in it since its derived from fruits and vegetables?

I noticed good big difference from taking whole food vitamins compared to the synthetic but synthetic forms are obviously much cheaper.

Agree, it probably would not be a bad idea to be on a multi vitamin with the GI conditions we have - if tolerated. And I recall several doctors mentioning that it would be a good idea if I was on one. For awhile I experimented with several synthetic multis. For ever reason they all would do me in. After taking I would have zero energy. They would seem to have the opposite effect of what is often advertised. With that, ever since I've shied away from taking a multi.

Possibly a food based vitamin would have a different effect on me. Next time at Vitamin World I'll see what is offered.

Synthetic forms make me extremely nauseous, and sometimes throw up. Your body can't absorb most synthetic forms of vitamins and minerals anyways, so it's sort of pointless to take and could even harm you. I've been taking a whole foods form (Alive, which is pretty cheap on Amazon considering what it is! I've also heard New Chapter is good) for a few years now and never feel symptoms like that when I take them, even on an empty stomach!
