Hi Everyone,

A couple of folk asked me to post and let them know what my dietitian came up with due to the problems I am having...

To date I am gluten, dairy free, low fat, low fibre and high potassium due to my Crohn's

My GP and asthma cons think I am an aspirin sensitive asthmatic now because my Pentasa made my asthma alot worse and so had to stop it. Pentasa is a similar drug to aspirin and they are both salicylate based.

My Dermatology cons thinks that the asthma link may be stronger than anyone realises yet. So she wants me to go Salicylate, Benzoic Acid and Azo Dye free as she thinks these could be the root of my food intolerances and that they impact on my skin, asthma and crohn's as a result..

Below is a list my dietitian worked out just for me in relation to all of the above see what you think....

I can have: Beef, chicken, eggs, kidney, lamb, oysters, pork, salmon, tripe and tuna as long as they arent smoked or processed in any way.

Fruit and Veg: Cabbage - green or white but not curly or kale
Celery (never liked it but whiz it down in soups), Lettuce (avoid like the plague as always end up with trapped wind!), Potato - as long as no peel and apparently there is more potassium if they are chips or jacket rather than boiled, Swede - turnip/rutabaga, Pear - peeled and if canned must be in own juice and are the only fruit I am allowed.

Other: Saffron, Soy, Tandoori spice, Vinegar but not malt, Maple syrup, Sugar - granulated and white.

Grains: Arrowroot, Buckwheat, Rice, ?Millet in relation to fibre content.

Beverages: Carob, Cocoa - must be 100%, Decaf Coffee of specific brands that have been tested like Andronicus, Harris, Moccona and Nescafe, Ovaltine, Gin (Gilbey's), Vodka (Smirnoff), Whiskey (Johnnie Walker).

Out of the above I havent drunk coffee or tea of any type for almost 2yrs now but they say it is high in potassium, so is cocoa and ovaltine, bamboo shoots, potato, and soy.

I don't drink alcohol at all as I have never liked the taste and it has always had a nasty effect on my guts within a couple of hours. Havent had cabbage in about 2yrs either yet they say I can now even with my crohns which I find odd!

To add to the above list I need to avoid all E numbers and food colourants to meet the Benzoic acid and Azo dye aspects. Basically its going back to whole foods and staying within the list.

The list means absolutely NO salicylate at all in my diet and my dietitian says once I have settled on this regime the next step is to try LOW salicylates for a while and see what I react to. Then move to medium and high then very high so I can have a bigger range in my diet but they think I may not be able to tolerate much. They are also telling me I could be on my elemental as part of my daily routine to supplement my foods for years to come but I can cope with partial just not total elemental as 6-7mths of it last year was more than enough.

Thought some of you might be interested in this game I am playing at the mo. All my consultants and GP strongly feel there is a constant cycle of inflammation going on with my skin, chest and guts that trigger each other off. The remicade is helping alot on all fronts but what happens when it doesnt? I am also still having fairly major problems with running to the loo and pain again now that I am off 6MP due to liver problems again. I want to try and help myself as much as possible just as you all do and they feel foods are a major player for me as for some Crohns, asthma and skin patients - just happens mine are all connected LOL

Would welcome any thoughts..

Jan, does remicade work on your immune system?

sounds to me like this is an immune issue, & i think i've heard that Crohns can exacerbate allergy tendencies. i know i've certainly chalked up more allergies as i've got older.

i don't know what to suggest - i do know there is a place in York where you can have a detailed allergy test by post - you do have to pay for it, but i know people who've used this service and were impressed by the results.
