funny story only an ostomate can appreciate !

A little bit of funny....(at least to us!)

At Gab's follow up appointment today one of the GI doctor's questions was..."How are your bowels moving now Gab? Everything going ok with that ?"

I swear if you could have seen the look on that girls face ! She looked at him like he might just be the most stupid person on the planet! Then we all started laughing for obvious reasons :ytongue:

Of course then he proceeded to explain to her that she had a Double Barrel Stoma, and what that was, etc... Poor girl didn't have a clue

We had a great laugh over it though !:ybiggrin:

Hopefully I can explain this correctly...

Basically a Double Barrel Stoma is 2 separate stoma's either brought together at the same opening; one proximal and one distal, or at two separate openings. Gab's is together thank goodness The proximal opening is the only one that food/waste is actually passed through, while the distal ( a mucus fistula?) can possibly allow a person to still have "bowel movements".
I hope that makes sense ! LOL It's very confusing to me and took me a while to figure it out so I obviously never tried to explain it to Gab because I didn't find a need.....until today ! :ylol: She obviously, with her reaction to the doctor, doesn't have any form of "normal bowel movements" ...just the mucous which she of course did NOT want to discuss ! :lol2:

When a nurse came to register me for at home, she started asking various questions.Most made sense. Then she asked when my last bowel movement was, I was tempted to say 11 days ago.

Similar stuff has happened to me. Heading off to seminary one of the questions in the health section was, "Do you have D or C". I wrote in, "ostomy, I have no bowel movement". I wish I could see the look on their faces.haha Similar, when I brought my health form to my doctor they asked if I would be needing a colonoscopy, due to all the questions. I replied that they will wait until I get there to perform it.haha
