Hi Everyone,
I have noticed that since i have had my surgery i have gained a considerable amount of weight ( 2 stone) 10 weeks post op. I know that i have been less active due to my recovery but 2 stone! I eat the same things, at the same amount and am starting to think may be i should start doing some exercise like going back to play squash.

Has anyone else experienced gaining a lot of weight due to having a stoma?

Also do you think 10 weeks is enough recovery time so i can start doing some sports and going back to work?

Due to the surgery i have become anaemic so i get tired easily.

Hope you are all well

Hi Adrian - I hear ya! I keep packing on the pounds since my surgery! Everyone tells me I look great, but I would like to stop gaining now! I take it as a sign that my body is healthy again and actually retaining the food that I put into it, instead of crapping it out immediately and nothing staying in like when I was sick.

check with your doc about exercising, but if you are feeling up to it, there's probably no reason why you can't start again slowly. It will be quite some time yet till you are ready for your old workout routine. Just do what you can handle.

Good luck! Are you getting your vitamin/mineral levels checked for anemia and/or vit b deficiency?

- Amy

Adrian, I hear you!!! Are you on any pred still?

And I hope they will give you some vitamin shots! 10 weeks post surgery you should be able to do some excercises. Do you have any support for your waist? At the very least walking would do you a world of good. (weather permitting)

wow, i can only dream of putting on 2 stone so quickly! lol im the complete opposite and really struggling to put the pounds back on!

as for sports.. im now around 8 weeks post op and have just started swimming and doing light exercise. This was after seeking advice from my doctor first however. Everyone is different i guess so like ameslouise says, probably best to check with your doc first!

i'm 8 weeks post op and have also put on 2 stone....i have been stuffing my face though and i should really stop now.
it's probably down to what amy said about food just not being retained pre-surgery, i don't think 10 weeks would be too soon to exercise if you feel up to it.

The problem with eating the same before surgery is that you weren't absorbing all those wonderful calories. Now, you are and you are used to eating that way. I have the same issue, but I didn't have surgery and I have gained 20 pounds this summer. Definitely exercise if you can, it helps with recovery by getting your blood flowing, and some dietary adjustments will probably be needed. Would probably be a good idea to speak to a nutritionist or dietitian for some assistance.

i gained 60 lbs. I was in remission for 9 years. I have lost all 40 since last december. No longer in remission and still losing weight.
It's a crazy disease!!

Hey, I havent had any surgery but I am gaining weight thanks to the steroids!! 24 pounds to be exact! Dont get me wrong I needed the weight after being so ill but when will it stop........? Probably when I stop stuffing my face with cake and chocolate and more cake! Got to love the munchies that steroids give you!

Go for some light exercise and see how you feel, build it up slowly and before you know it you will be fighting fit again.

Take care!

I had surgery in june and have put on 15lbs since then. By the way is a stone like 10lbs? Just wondering:) I really needed the weight but at the same time I am watching what I eat and how much. Im thinking the same thing that my body is starting to absorb more now then it did preop. Im walking everyday to try and get my body back. I think its up to you and the way that you feel if you're able to be active again. I had a 10in incision and had a blood transfusion so I have only just now gotten out to walk again. I wish you the best!!
