I have posted this question in 2 forums so sorry for the repeat. I'm just looking for info on this procedure.

I had my follow up with GI today. I was prepared to be sent on my way with IBS dx since biopsy was normal. He says I have something going on in small intestine. He thinks that it is Crohns or possibly slow growing carcenoid tumor based on CT's and symptoms. He has scheduled me for another pill cam. He also wants to do a double balloon endoscopy. Has anyone had this test? He said that he can see and biopsy an area of small intestine that can't be reached with regular colonoscopy. From what I have read, the test takes several hours. I'm a little nervous and would like to know more about it.

I am afraid that I have not had this test so cannot be of any help. I will however keep my fingers crossed that someone can help and send lots of hugs

A DBE is done with a general anaesthetic where the put an endoscopy through the small bowel. They need to use the balloons to stop the small bowel from folding in on itself. They can do biopsies with it. It isn't done in many centres as is very specialised.

Hi: I now have this procedure instead of regular colonoscopy due to a birth defect (my colon is "loopy and floppy" - i.e., a regular colonoscopy is incredibly difficult and carries a high risk of peforating the colon). I have had it once to date (and yes, the added bonus of being able to visualize the small intestine is very useful). The procedure could take a long time if your GI decides to image a large part of the small intestine, or it might take only 90 mins or so. If you can tolerate general anaesthetic, then you should wake up feeling just fine and ready to go, perhaps even less groggy than people who have twilight sedation!
