Just curious if anyone has had problems with gluten since having CD?
I was to be tested for Celiac but then was put on prednisone when I was hospitalized and couldn't have the scope to test for celiac because prednisone covers up the celiac and it would come out a false negative if I do have celiac.
My GI specialist said that interolence to gluten and bowel disease are not linked. But I think otherwise. Anyways just curious what others experiences have been.

I am going gluten free as of tomorrow again because as I taper off the prednisone if my symptoms comes back I don't want to be guessing if it gluten or my crohn's.

I've never really had a problem. I guess the word is still out on whether it's better to be gluten free, but I have gluten in moderation like anything else.

Regardless if you actually test postive for celiac, there is a possibility that you could be sensitive to gluten. There is no test for gluten sensitivity.

I started experimenting with my diet by cutting out gluten. I didn't really notice any changes until I took it a step further and cut out all grains. Grains are pro-inflammatory. This isn't a scientific article, but it's a blog that I enjoy and it explains the effects of grains on the gut:

Since cutting out all grains, I've noticed huge changes. No more migraines, my sinuses are cleared, and my GI issues are improved.

I did try a diet for many moneth or years that cut out certain things in my diet. For me it didn't work.. what it did for me is helped me feel like I had some control over things that weren't controlable !!
today I feel a lot better. I ahve been diagnosed with Post traumatic Stress Disorder. I think I already knew that btu I did not go the usual mental health route that others may go. I used a lot of Alternative /Complementary medicine :)) it helped a lot. It is expeneisve though :( But for the grace od god I had the money ant time and most of all the willingness to try it !
Today I can eat almsot anything. I do get triggers in my disease.. both of them. Although I think my PTSD triggers the bowel /stomach issues. I also have peopel and situations who trigger me. Oen is my mom and other memebrs of my family who in my opinion are *not* healthy. Others are friendships that are a one way street and I chose not to put any more enegry into them.
The sad thing is I *do* live in poverty :( I am lucky to have enough.. ( or will I) to eat this week. I had a very bad health scare last year... a pulmonary embolism) and it triggered a lot of things including sending me into a *very* deep depression.
Now that I am alive.. I am *angry ! I am trying to get back to taking care of myself but it is hard to do with little to know money. Thankfully I have foudn a cousnellor / case manager who is *hopefully* going to take action for me. ( I need to go back but I haev had no transportation and no money!! )
Yes.. I do have family !! I have asked for help but they are *unwilling* ( not unable ??!!) to help me !! They are however more than willing to dump their problems on me and tell em what I *should* do. You know what they say .. when there is one finger pointing at you there is 3 pointing back at *them* !!) Money cannot buy happiness !! Lots og rumpy people live in big hosues and drive nice cars...but it doesn't mean they are healthy !!

I have both Celiac and Crohn's, and saw numbers recently suggesting 18% of people with CD have Celiac. I was dx with Crohn's in 2005 after an abscess/resection and with Celiac in 2008 (biopsy confirmed). Going gluten free is not easy- gluten is everywhere. And with Celiac, as opposed to an intolerance, you have to be even more careful, as little as 20 parts per million (less than a crumb) can set off the autoimmune reaction. That said, after going gluten free my health improved dramatically so it is worth it.

I was gluten free for 3 months and then had to introduce it again for the celiac testing. I began a gluten free diet again today.

Panda33 good luck with the renewed gluten free diet. I know it had to be tough to go back on gluten for the test, especially when you didn't even get the answer.
