So after listening to a radio program about genetically modified foods and the info I had from my research paper, I have found many scientists linking these gmos to crohns and UC. It makes sense since the gmos completely rack the insides of the cows and create ulcers and whatnot, so what keeps it from us. Now I know there are soooooo many theories out there but what is everyones take on this? If you want look up gmos and crohns and there are a few articles about studies. It just seemed to make sense kind of

Hi Pipergirl,

I have heard different things about Genetically Modified (GM) food, so it is hard to know sometimes know who or what to believe.

GM food is thought to allow for food to be developed that is more resistant to inclimate weather and is more nutritious. This is thought to help create crops that are easier to grow and provide more nutrition, especially to people in poverty. While in the U.S. recently I saw in a grocery store they were advertising avocados that had 1/3rd less fat than normal avocados. I assumed this was achieved through genetic modification. The food companies also claim that their testing suggests GM foods are safe for human consumption. Another potential benefit is seen in being able to develop foods that are inspect resistant and require less water or pesticides to grow, which would make growing them have a lower impact on the environment.

The arguement against GM food is that any GM food study is based on a very short time frame, so we really do not know the long-term effects of GM food consumption on humans. Studies have also shown health risks to animals who have been fed GM food.

Additionally, there is fear that once released into the wild, GM foods might outcompete normal foods and expand into the wild.

There are additional fears and risks of GM foods that I did not get into either (including how GM foods might cause reactions in people with allergies as foods will contain the genes of other foods that people may be allergic too, the fact that food companies will patent their seeds).

In summary, I personally try to avoid GM foods whenever possible, mostly based on following the precautionary principle.

One good site you may want to check out that has a lot of information on GM food is GM Watch.

Hope that helps answer your question!
