I handed in my sample for a faecal calprotectin test at the end of May as requested by my gastro consultant however nobody seems to want to give me the results! The results went directly to my consultant who, according to his secretary, is away on holiday for 2 weeks. The secretary couldn't give me the results so I asked for the results to be sent to my GP so they could give them to me. However the GP has looked at the results and said that it has to be the consultant who gives me the results. I have my first appointment with my consultant on the 15th of this month however I'm starting to panic now. Surely if the results were normal then my GP could have just told me?? Does this mean that my results are abnormal and I have to discuss a treatment plan with the consultant as this is outside the scope of a GP's duties???

Most likely, it is just protocol that your GI give you the results (chain of command) and not that there is anything wrong. Maybe your GP doesn't know how to interpret them.

UnXmas I didn't have a face to face appointment with my GP but they wouldn't even entertain the idea of me making an appointment to get my results as the GP had specifically said he would not be giving me the results.
2thFairy I hope it is nothing but surely the GP would know how to interpret the results. I'm "just" a nurse and even I know the basics.

I agree that the results should come through your GI.There may be nothing to worry about at all.I was dx'd in 2006,but started having tests last August for new symptoms and am waiting for an op. that has nothing to do with Crohns (usually). It was just discovered by chance, due to all the other tests. What I'm trying to say is,unless it's viewed as an emergency, everything takes an age in the U.K.Consultation,diagnosis,further tests and diagnosis etc.etc.I had to chase up results a while ago, phoned & E-mailed GI,then GP then back to GI.So try not to worry, your GI will want to see you to discuss your Calprotectin levels, whether they're showing increased inflammation or not

On the flip side, I've had my GP deliver bad test results without having to wait to see the consultant. I think the protocol is just different in different circumstances, or different doctors have different preferences. If the results were really serious, they wouldn't make you wait while the consultant has his holiday.

I haven't even met my GI consultant yet and he's already taken two holidays that I know of! Alright for some.... I guess I'll just need to wait till I see him on the 15th and hope for the best. I had a really bad day at work yesterday, loaded with the cold, stressing that I couldn't go home sick because I've already been off for 3 months and then the abdominal cramps started :( Fed up!!

I hope you're feeling much better today.I know it feels like ages until the 15th,but just get through one day at a time, and be kind to yourself.

Please let us know how your appointment goes, won't you ?

Thanks scottsma I will definitely let you know how I get on at my appointment. Still feeling a bit rubbish today but I'm not back at work till Thursday so at least I have a few days to recover.
