hair loss

My wife is on Asacol, Entocort and Cimzia.
She's getting hair loss. It's not noticeable from looking at her, but you can see it when she washes or combs her hair.

I know some hair loss is normal, but her loss is unusual.

I've heard that lack of protein can cause that and that Asacol can too.

Anyone else have that issue?

hair loss

I have experienced bouts of hair loss off and on with this illness. I have not specifically related it to my medications. I have been on Asacol for about 10 years. Make sure her thyroid levels are checked as that can cause hair loss. My hair has always come back to near normal thickness etc..for me, I think the hair loss was more from poor nutrition due to vomitting and diarrhea associated with bad flare ups. I hope this helps.

I lost about 70% of my hair from around March to June of this year, it was very noticeable and I now have hair extensions to add volume back. It's not an ideal solution, due to the expense but for now it solves the problem atleast.

I went to see a Trichologist, basically someone who specialises in hair, and she said the problem was described as chronic telogen effluvium and for me it was a combination of low iron levels, low b12 levels, general poor nutrition and taking azathioprine (which I have now stopped). I was also asked to get blood tests to confirm nothing else was going on. I now take various supplements to correct the above problems along with some vitamins especially targeted at skin, hair and nails. I am also applying something called Minoxidil 4% in the form of a topical solution to my scalp, twice a day which has been proven to stimulate the hair follicles. I believe this is available over the counter under the trade name Rogaine in a lesser strength.

Luckily I do have a quite a lot of new growth coming through now, although obviously my hair will time time to totally thicken out again. I'm just grateful this isn't going to be a long term problem, I would think in these circumstances in rarely is though. I'd suggest maybe your wife brings it up with her care provider and see if they have any suggestions as to why this is happening in her particular case and to see if there are any targeted solutions.

thanks Natalie. I'm glad to hear you're seeing the growth now.

I usually go with her to see her doc. And I'm sure we'll bring it up. But i wanted to get a feel for it beforehand. I've learned that her doctors are pretty good, but it doesn't make up for education before a visit.

I'm worried about her iron levels and her general nutrition. she takes a number of supplements, b-12 and vitamin e among them. But, last someone looked, 20-30% of her colon was inflamed and I'm concerned that she's just not absorbing the nutrients. Of course, it could all have nothing to do with Crohns .. ..

Thanks again.
