Has anyone had to deal with Aeromonas hydrophila? (along with CDiff?)

:sign0085: I hope that someone can give more info on this. I googled it and didn't like what I saw. Here's the story...

My son went last week (Thursday) for a follow-up with his GI. After discussing symptoms, he said he wanted to do some stool samples to see if CDiff was still present and how bad it was. He felt like it was definitely still an issue even though B had done a 2-week run of Flagyl. Dr. C said that he would probably have to do that again or possibly Vancomycin (spelled correctly?). A couple of days ago, I got a call from the pharmacy that they were working on his prescription for Vancomycin, so I wasn't surprised. Dr. C's office called today and explained the dosing schedule for Vancomycin, then stated that he tested positive for the aeromonas hydrophila as well. Apparently the doctor wasn't too concerned about it at first, but then changed his mind and prescribed Septra/Bactrim (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) to deal with it. Ugh! I feel like the boy is walking petri dish or something and I need to keep him contained :yfrown: Anyway, they didn't tell me to take any precautions other than frequent hand washing, especially after changing him (pull-ups because we've had a TON of toilet training issues and he has some very smelly and nasty looking diarrhea right now).

So my questions is: Has anyone else had to deal with this? If so, what was your experience and what precautions did you take? It's a little overwhelming and scary. I'm afraid we won't get it under control and he'll end up in the hospital. I'm also afraid to get his recommended flu shot right now.

I searched the forum for answers before posting, and was a little scared when I didn't come up with anything. Thanks in advance! :)

OK I found this thread. Good!

Grace had c. diff and took two round of flagly to stop it. Her doses were a month each.
I still get concerned it will pop back up. Her little body couldn't take it right now.

Grace was on bactrim for awhile. No problems with that med.

As far as the Aeromonas hydrophila, do you now how she got it?
Sorry I now nothing about it.

Hi! I've been keeping up with your other thread...still praying you get answers :)

I don't know how he got it. I guess I should have asked that, huh? I thought of it after I got off the phone with the doctor's office and it was too late to call back. Grrrrr!!! Anyway, he's done the Flagyl once, and I was hoping that would be it. No such luck! I feel like I live at the flipping pharmacy. It's sad when they see me coming and start getting his stuff together. So, I picked up the other and he's got to take it with the Vancomycin.

Do you think I should do probiotics while he's on this stuff? I already give him Culturelle every day. I just wondered if I should give him something else or something in addition to the Culturelle. I do worry about him ending up in the hospital again. I'm really hoping to hear from someone who had had this before. Thanks again for your support, FW! You're the best!

Hi Tangie,
I just googled this bacteria and agree with you that it can be pretty s area. But it sounds like they are treating you son correctly with the antibiotics to get rid of it. Make sure he takes them until they are finished. It is good he is taking probiotics as they are good for helping the gut maintain its normal flora and fauna that can be wiped out by antibiotics. I am sorry your little guy is going through all this. A for precautions for the rest of the family making sure you do good hand washing after changin him is the most important thing. Keep us posted on how he is doing.

Sorry my friend I just did a search on here and no body has reported that yet.
Like c. diff it's a smaller group. However Aeromonas hydrophila is on the rare side to get.
Sorry. Off on our road trip.

That's okay :) I know I'll get answers soon. I just worry that it's going to get out of hand and he will end up in the hospital. If I get any info, I will be sure to share it. It may benefit someone in the future!

No experience with that here hun.

I hope your boy is doing okay on the antibiotics and things are settling, bless him.

As to precautions, while ever he has diarrhoea follow contact precautions. So definitely be hyper vigilant with hand washing and with washing any other articles of clothing or surfaces the diarrhoea may come into with. It might even be an idea to buy a box of disposable gloves and use those when changing him. Also if you are in a position that he can use the one toilet to himself then I would probably do that to.

Thinking of you,

Dusty: He seems okay, but I guess we'll know soon if it's helping. He will start his second antibiotic on Thursday. Giving two at once in addition to his other meds...I'm afraid I'll mess it up! Like I said, I'm going to quiz his GI when I next speak to him. He was obviously familiar with it, since the nurse said he felt it could be a problem. I've definitely thought of gloves, for many reasons :) Right now he's still in disposable training pants (he wore diapers for a while during and after his hospital stay. Not something I wanted to have my 4 year old wear, but hey, what can you do?) so it's not like he's having to share a bathroom with everyone. That's been a blessing in disguise. I want him toilet trained so badly and he has been reluctant and stubborn from the beginning. Oh, well. Hopefully he'll be trained before he gets married and leaves home! :/

If he isn't it will be his wife's problem.

I'm sure you will do just fine with the meds. :) I know what you mean though. Prior to Matt's surgery he was on two lots of antibiotics for three months plus his other meds so I ended up using a dosette! It was a godsend, you wouldn't believe how many times I would go back and check because I couldn't remember if I had already given him his dose!

I hear what you are saying about the toilet training but like you say...ya gotta do what ya gotta do Mum. It will all fall into place when the time is right.

Good luck and let us know how you are getting on!

Sorry I have just caught up with your thread. Sorry to hear your poor boy is having to deal with all this. No experience with either so no real advice, just the usual from reading things - keeping seperate towels and wiping down the bath afterwards.
I hope the meds start to work quickly so he can start to feel better and so you can stop worrying. My son was like a walking medicine chest a few months ago while dealing with an abscess - so many antibiotics (5 I think) over a few months. My local pharmacy now knows me by name and I couldn't believe it when the GP's receptionist recognised my voice on the phone! :ywow:

What did you ever find out About aeromonas hydrophila? My two year old got diagnosed with it earlier this week. I can't find much on it and I'm scared my 5 month old may have it too.

Thanks for all your help in advance.
