Hi everyone, havent posted for months, - I had re-section back in 2003 and on pentasa, felt fine for couple of years then gradually starting having flare ups and feeling generally crap, 2009 things got a lot worse - had investigations done and have now got stomach ulcers as well, consultant told me last april that all the pain and vomiting I had been having was due to narrowing at site of op and thought would be good idea to try putting stent in. That was last April - nhs being what it is didnt see anyone till July when I was told that they werent sure about colonoscopy results (the chap that did it had been subsequently sacked) and instead of putting stent in they thought they would try changing my meds and putting me on azipraprine (wrong spelling!) after scaring me with the side effects etc and because I had just starting new full time job which was stressful enough - I decided against taking it and carried on with my pentasa. Fast forward to Christmas and I spent five days in hospital going in Boxing day with obstruction in bowel again. After five days of being on drip they sent me home with an appointment for beg feb. My question is if they know I have a narrowing in intestine why havent they put stent in as previously suggested and also what is the point in going on a new drug if they havent cured narrowing first? I would very much welcome advice from anyone who is on this Azipraprine which it looks like I will have to end up having - is it as bad as i have been led to believe. I am so fed up since leaving hospital I am mainly on liquid diet as as soon as I eat anything bulky I start to fill up again and it all seems to stay in the top half of my stomach, laxatives dont seem to work properly anymore, am trying dulcoease to keep everything soft as well!

Thanks

Perdita

Narrowing can be caused by scar tissue or by active inflammation. I guess they originally thought it was scarring, so treat with a stent, but now they're leaning towards inflammation. Either way, you need to be on a stronger drug because the pentasa obviously isn't enough to keep you in remission (even if the narrowing is scar tissue, that means it must have been inflamed before).

As for information on azathioprine, you can do a search on here as there are quite a few recent threads about it. There is also a great article in tge news section, about weighing up risks and benefits of treatment, that will hopefully put your mind at ease.
