hi, new member

my 9 yr old son was diagnosed with crohns disease nov 2010. he had been losing weight since august and was fairly rapidly diagnosed. he has tried an elemental diet, low fat/fibre diet, steroid treatment and has now started on aziathioprine. last year he was off school from september til january and very poorly indeed. he tried coming off prednisalone in march but went downhill rapidly. he is mad into football and usually very active so the enforced inactivity was tremendously difficult. his inflammation is where the small and large bowels meet, he suffers with both vomiting and diarrohea when he experiences symptoms. emotionally he became very depressed when every treatment didn't work so i am really hoping the aziathioprine will do the trick.

Hi Sharon and :welcome:

I'm so sorry you had to find your way here...

Your little guy has certainly been through the wringer and you too no doubt. We have a Parents Forum here so pop on over and have a visit there too.

Both of my children have Crohns in the Terminal Ileum as well and are on Azathioprine. I hope it does the trick for your son.
When did he start it? It will take about 3 months for him to be fully therapeutic.
We also have an Imuran (Azathioprine) Club as well.

Has Remicade or Humira been suggested to you if the Aza doesn't work?

My son, although older, has just been through a similar rough trot with hospital admissions and missing school and he is also a football fanatic!

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Take care, :Karl:

thanks, ben will have been on aza 3 months by the end of july and so far is coping much better with the tapering off of the steroids than he did previously, so i am hopeful! the forum is really interesting, i am keen to learn of the experiences of other parents of children with CD, and also of any alternative therepies which might be helpful, so i will keep reading!

Hi Sharon Welcome!! I am sorry that you son is suffering from CD. I hope the meds are able to help out. It is so tough on the kids to be sick all the time.

Hi Sharon and welcome! That is a good sign that tapering off the steroids is going better this time around while he is on azathioprine. And it can take a few months to take full effect. I sure hope it does the trick for your son!

Hey Sharon, welcome to the forum :) So sorry to hear your little man has been diagnosed with crohns. Fingers crossed the azathioprine works for him. Big hugs to you both :)
