Hi,
I was diagnosed with CD August 2011. Prednisolone helped to start with but hasnt really since Jan 2012 and i got worse and worse. I lost nearly 2 stone and was bed and house bound for about 2 months. 3 weeks ago i had my first infliximab infusion and its really worked. All the stomach pain, D and lost appetite has gone - ive put on 8lb in 2 weeks which im not happy about but i am happy if you know what i mean. Anyway im still on prednisolone but tapering down and will be off it in 3 weeks. Ive had my second infliximab infusion 2 weeks after first and i have next one in 4 weeks.

So since the first infusion nearly 3 weeks ago ive been able to leave the house and even walk my dogs. Ive been off work since early jan and as im freelance i will have to look for work again which i wont do until im feeling 100%. I do agility with my dogs which involves a little bit of running. Only 30 seconds or so each class. I went last thursday as i havent been since december and miss it so much. Well i collapsed in the middle of the ring. I didnt feel i had lost my balance or anything i just felt so weak i couldnt hold myself up and when my heart rate had gone up it felt like it might jump out my chest. Before jan i could run 3 dogs in 5 rounds each without a problem. Im nearly back to the weight i was before being ill this time but i have no muscle. My legs look like sinews. How do i go about getting some strength back? Is it just time or are there things i can do - walk my dogs for longer etc? The last 3 weeks ive cleared out the attic and garage and done loads of stuff around the house - partly as the steroids make me hyper. But im certainly not sat doing nothing all day. But i seem Ok doing the house work and even hoisting boxes up and down the attic but a few seconds of dog agility and i couldnt do it -my legs felt like jelly for 2 days after. Ive also struggled a bit to open some bottles if the lids tight. my skins all really saggy too and my periods have stopped - a disaster when im starting IVF as soon as im well enough.

so how do i build my muscle back up not just my weight?

I'm also in a simular situation and would also like to see the responses.

And I really hate opening bottles.. pretty much any kind it seriously hurts my hands! ..And it's kinda embarrising being 21 and needing to ask a younger sibling to open up a water bottle.. We did find these grippy rubber pads which makes opening bottles and jars a lot easier.

I'm biased! As a T'ai Chi instructor (retired) I recommend it as a way to gently develop leg strength in particular. It is a useful tool to have when you do start more aerobic exercise, as it helps prepare the body for movement. After being ill, a gentle approach is sensible.
Later, push ups on fingertips!

Good luck.

It is very hard!
I started being ill just over 2 years ago and fatigue was my biggest symptom. I was off work for 9 months with it all. I could hardly walk anywhere and when i did walk I was like an old woman! Since January last year I have started to work on my fitness. I have had to take it very slowly doing a little at a time to build up my strength. Lots of walking and them gentle exercise. Little bits of yoga and Pilates type of exercise. I also used my wiifit too. I didn't want to leave my house to go to an exercise class as I knew I didnt have the strength to last for 20 mins never mind an hour! Anyhow, a year later I am so much fitter. I have managed to get exercise back into my life and in a great routine. I can do an hours yoga class a week as well as plenty of exercise at home too! It has been very empowering for me.
So just take it very slowly. Do something that you enjoy but do it in small steps building up slowly.
I hope this helps you
Sam
