Hi all...just wondering how ones knows if they're in total remission? And wondering how long remission can last? Don't think I'm there yet...but hoping soon!!! Any ideas on how to get there????!!!! There's always hope right...

Well, since my Proctocolectomy I have been in total remission. I was able to train hard for a half marathon for 16 weeks and run it to the best of my ability. That's how I knew :)

To stay in remission my doc has me continuing on Humira. Not thrilled about that but better than more Crohns surgeries in the future.

Well, after my last colonoscopy, I was told I have no active Crohn's anywhere in my system...so I'm saying I'm in remission as well. Having a bag helps too I think...they just cut all the bad junk out. I'm hoping it lasts a long, long time :)

I'm in remission now too!
Apparantly, according to my gastro doc, it means no inflammation, which in turn means no flare ups such as abdo pains, nausea, vomiting, fever, infection, etc
I get occasional D, but that's cos I eat crap!
Prednisolone and Metronidazole (Flagyl) got me to remission and it took 11 months, and I'm hoping that this remission lasts as long as my last one which was 5 years!
So, yes there's always hope!
xxx

For me remission from Crohns meant no blockage, no constant fevers and putting weight back on. Some are fortunate to be able to avoid surgery and just take meds but for many it's too late and surgery is the main treatment initially. Some go through quite a few surgeries in less than 10 yrs or might stay in remission for at least 20 yrs or more. With all the research and advances in medicine hopefully someday there will be a cure for those of us who deal with it from day to day :)

Absolutely.

I agree a lot with the weight part too. If I am putting on weight - it means i am in remission. Since the transplant ive put on 43lbs in 6 months. On purpose of corse, but still way faster than Im use to. Im still pretty shocked.

Well I know there are medical definitions of remission, such as a CDAI score of <150, but for me remission means complete absence of disease. No drugs, no inflammation, nothing. I achieved this once for a year where I was back to pre-Crohn's state. I've been free of symptoms over my time with active disease but I still wouldn't class that as remission.

No drugs?? That's a huge risk. I consider remission the absence of symptoms. No diarrhea, no pain, no mucous, no nausea. I did have a med-free remission of 7 years, but my 'mild' Crohn's that was confined to just my TI came back with a vengeance as severe and all through my colon. I'll be happy to stay on maintenance meds this time, once I get back to my happy place.

Well my opinion is that if a disease is active, whether it is causing symptoms or not is an irrelivence. I had a small bowel X-ray in 2007, and an MRI in December 2010, which was described as "A mirror of the small bowel X-ray performed in 2007". My disease has been fairly constant througout so far and even though I am often symptom free, it is by no means a state of remission as my elevated CRP and MRI confirms.

I know if I'm in remission if I have had no Crohn's symptoms at all while on my maintenance medications, this includes no more abdominal pain, the big "D" coming from my ileostomy, and I get medical clearance from my GI and colon surgeon which I did last year. :thumleft::thumleft:

Also, if I'm not living in the bathroom 24/7 due to nausea/vomiting or doubled over on the floor due to an obstruction, then I know I'm in remission.

2011 is looking awesome already as my new surgeon kicked some serious butt and fixed me right up last year. I'm praying that this lasts for a very lonnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg time.

Wishing everyone here a life long remission!!!!:ghug:

No gut pain,no dreaded D,not being painfully white, not being always tired,no erythema nodosum,no weight loss & being able to put some weight on,no severe 'pitting' of my nails, not having colds on a constant basis.

I'm now in complete remission from Crohn's as i don't suffer with this list.

HEAVEN

For me it is just being on bactrin and colestipol only not having to use other meds.

And the gut is not being too erratic and I am keeping to my diet

I did have a 5 year spell after a colectomy - looking to beat that personal record again :)

When I was 13 I was operated and took out 2 feel of my big and small instestines. From then on all the way to 33 years old I was free. no symptoms no pain and no drugs. But then at 33 that all stoped and now I am back where I started pretty much. I had a few years of freedom. I hope to get them back soon. Probably never agian without drugs but at least without pain. So long I have no pain and the Big D I am in remission.

Yeah, college was remission for me. No pain or drugs.

I'll feel remission minded when I can resume parkour, weight training, and eating whatever I please again on minimum medications. I'll be happy at least, isn't that all that matters?

The truth is sometimes you simply fool yourself you think you are in remission...You abuse your digestive system....even if I dont experience any pain, no D, doesn't neccesarily mean you in remission-
listen carefully to your tummy!LOL..

heya, my flare been going on since janurary. they say it takes a bit for meds to work so im praying soon it will start. i havent been in remission yet since finding out i have crohns, but i would be so greatful to feel the day i do go into remission.

Well, my GI with the VA says I have incomplete remission with a reoccurance of symptoms after 3 weeks with Remicade... and the past two weeks I have been feeling like I want to die quite frankly... to add insult to injury, I am trying to enter a clinical study and that ASS BAG thinks I am in complete remission... well... my rump is raw and bleeding, multiple fissures that close on remicade but reopen as it wears off... then mucus in stool and blood, oh, and my belly button is starting to get inflamed... fistula is starting to reopen again... so I know I am not in remission. I had a colonoscopy after an infusion and it still showed mild, active crohns. May just say screw the study since that doctor is insulting my intelligence. Anyone try Canabidiol Oil, CBD Oil? How much of it would it take for symptom improvement?

Hi I start to have significant symptoms again after my 5th Remicade infusion. How did you manage it ?
