Hi, I'm Keno,
I am new to the site. I have had crohns since i was 13. From the age of 16 I got interested in working out due to the fact I was sooo skinny. Throughout the years this interest progressed to becoming a trainer for years at all the gyms. Eventually I am in finance now with a great job that I enjoy. But if its one thing I do know, it's how to get my body and mind back into gear after a flare! I thought I would share this in hopes of helping anyone else out with crohns that might have struggled with their weight, or with bouncing back in the gym after a flare up. I know many times I've worked so hard on my diet and in the gym only for my progress to be taken all away with a flare! Here is a mini blog and all my tips and guides for getting your body back to shape!

Now my issue with crohns has always been absorption, and losing weight when I flare. I know some people with crohns will have the opposite problem in gaining weight with crohns due to things like prednisone and such. This blog will be for all those hard gainers. Feel free to ask my anything about losing weight too.

First off, if you have just come out of a flare, and turning it around, you are most likely still dehydrated! Go to the store and get some pedialite! This is the absolute best thing you could ever have to re-hydrate yourself which is what you need at this moment. If your muscles are dehydrated you cant expect them to grow. Make sure you drink atleast one of these a day. Get on track with your meds and build a routine of taking them every single day. If we are going to build muscle back here we cant have you inflamed, so lets give those meds the best chance at helping us do just that!

Now I will be focusing on diet and how to construct a diet that should be somewhat crohns friendly (you may have to alter it for yourself), and more importantly accurate in terms of the sufficient amounts of calories with the correct macro nutrient ratios.

**In progress** I will update proofread and change this when I have time through out the day(s), and between work. Bare with me.

Before I was diagnosed with Crohn's I used to go to the gym regularly, and I had a somewhat buffed up body, and throughout the months and since I was diagnosed, I started losing weight like crazy, and I no longer go to the gym.

I'm so looking forward to the tips and diet you're gonna provide in this thread. Thanks in advance!

I was up tonight and wanted to add to my thread here. You can't edit your posts after a certain amount of time?? I'm trying to add to it but cant find the edit button. It's changed or the layout has changed since i was once a member here long before I think.

That's correct, I believe it's 24 hours that you're allowed to edit a post, and after that you either can write a response in thread or you can ask one of the mods or admins to edit your original post for you. If there's content you'd like added to the original post, just let me know and I can do that for you.

Any advice on how to start working out without making myself sick? I'm not currently flaring, but was recently diagnosed with AMPS. The treatment involves an extremely intense workout for 45 minutes every day. I'm pretty out of shape since I've been sick for so long. I probably haven't had a real work out in over two years. So, every time I work out I have trouble breathing and end up nearly vomiting. Last time I tried to push through it. I ended up vomiting three times. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to avoid or reduce these problems?

Hi Grace,

I am no doctor, nor am I familiar with AMPS. So you want to always ask them first if it is ok. But I can tell you that everytime I've made a come back I have to gauge how sick I am and push my intensity accordingly. I do really low intensity when I jump back in. Later on I increase it. The longer I been out, the slower I jump back into it. No reason for me to be impatient at this stage, your body will respond to almost anything new after 2 years. I will still design a workout plan, but it might just have one less set per exercise, and i wont push it to failure, maybe just 65% intensity to start. I make sure that I take all my meds, and eat well and enough good foods if i can for 2 days before I start. I want to make sure my body is well nourished and hydrated before I start placing extra demands on it that require energy (calories). If my appetite has not come all the way back I might substitute elemental drinks for the calories missed. Elemental high calorie drinks will also be the best thing you could ever have post workout too. Since its broken down and your body is in need of nutrients fast. These are some of the things you could try. To answer your question more directly I wouldnt push it to where you throw up. You don't need to do that right now. But also make sure you are placing enough extra demands on your body to make it worthwhile. You can do this by monitoring your target heart rate.

Thank you so much. I knew the AMPS treatment would be miserable when the doctor told me about it. I just didn't fully grasp how bad it would be. Maybe if I try some of this it'll be a little easier.

Keno123 Thank you so much for this, it is so encouraging to hear your story! I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease a month ago. My meds are currently working well and I want to work (slowly) on get some of my strength back as I lost quite a bit of weight (from the flare) and muscle tone (from being in hospital and bed rest)!
:)
