Hi,
I have lurked on and off this forum for a bit. Pretty sure something inflammatory is going on in my gut, but it doesn’t want to show itself. Started getting bad symptoms in June 2011 (chronic diarrhoea and abdominal pain etc). Blood tests have often shown elevated CRP. I also had a chronic anal fissure for about 18 months. I also had had joint pain on and off too. Maybe weight loss too?? Lost 25 kg without much effort and another 20 kg with some hard work over a 1 year or so (regained some of that now).
• 2 x Colonoscopy – negative
• PillCam – negative
• Upper endoscopy – small hiatal hernia and GERD damage
Gastro has diagnosed me with “a function bowel disorder” i.e. IBS. However, I did get him to eventually prescribe me Pentasa 3 g/day which has really reduced by gut symptoms. Also have been fairly low fibre, gluten-free and low FODMAPs which has made somewhat of a difference too.
In April this year, I was diagnosed with “a seronegative spondyloarthrothy” with MRI evidence of sacroillitis and also have peripheral joint issues. The rheumatologist thought that I probably have the subtype related to IBD. Replaced part of my Pentasa with Sulfasalazine.
Been pretty good for the last few months. But, my blood tests have gotten out of whack now –elevated CRP, ESR, WBCs and platelets. Also ferritin is pretty low. Wondering if it is worthwhile doing the pillcam again, but would cost me about $600 (insurance will cover some). Off to the Gastro to discuss next week, but I am not sure how many times to “go look” before giving up??
