My 12 yo son has had 5 cycles of Remicade. His last colonoscopy showed 3 large uclers in his TI. The dr has decided to have treatments every 4 weeks instead of 8. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Take care,
Vicky

It's common for doctors to change the dosing schedule if the remicade seems to not last the full 8 weeks. Was your son put on the initial 2, 4, 6 week infusions? When I was on it years ago, I had to have it every 6 weeks. My body just wouldn't make it to 8 before symptoms would start to return. I don't have any problems with the 8 week schedule now.

Has the doctor given you a back up in case it has stopped working for him? Hopefully, after a few infusions closer together he will start to respond to it better. Good luck.

SarahAnne,
He did start on the 2, 4, 6 week cycle. He just has not responded the way the dr thought he would. I spoke with the nurse today and she said the dr. made a few "Ohh" comments when she showed him the levels before the last infusion. (There was still remicade in his blood stream). So that plan may change. Garrison is a strange case. His only symptom is anemia. He never has any pain, we never noticed a change in his stool since he already has short gut from NEC as a baby.

I understand we need to be patience and give the remicade a chance to work. I just question whether doubling up the dose is the way to go. Thanks for any input.

Take care,
Vicky

When Remicade stopped working as effectively for me as it usually did, my GI said that we could up my dosage (e.g. going from 5 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg) and/or increase the frequency of the medicine (e.g. get the infusion every 6 or 4 weeks rather than every 8 weeks). Ultimately, we decided to go with upping the dosage but keeping the frequency the same (I chose this because I didn't want to have to get infusions more frequently).

We have now been switched back to 8 week treatments when the nurse saw that remicade was still in his system after 7 weeks. Hopefully, the 5th time is the charm and the Remicade will start working. I am curious as to how long we will stay with Remicade before moving on if the bleeding does not stop. Thanks for all the feedback.

Take care,
Vicky
