So I was on Humira for 7 months and experience drastic hair loss! I stopped taking Humira in August and I am wondering if anyone has any info on this. How long will it take for the hair loss to stop and grow back? I'm also losing eyebrows and lashes. I use hair loss shampoo and take biotin every day. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Hi Bre. :welcome: to the forum. I have been on Humira for 2 years now and have not heard of hair loss as a side effect of the drug. However, I googled Humira Hair Loss and found an interesting post on drugs.com. Here it is. http://www.drugs.com/answers/hair-loss-humira-363542.html.

It sounds like if it is a side effect of Humira, it is not very common.

Good luck to you and I hope you find this forum a helpful place.

Thanks for your reply. That is strange because I read on several websites that it is a common side effect. Also the hair loss began after I started humira so I'm hoping now that I'm off it it'll stop!! I miss my hair :( I've had blood work for everything under the sun and everything was normal.

No hair loss to report, but then again I did not have much to begin with. ;)

I have never heard of hair loss as being a side effect of H.

However I can say that stress is a huge reason for hair loss.

Just offering my support.

Best of Luck

It is listed as a side effect of humira and I have read other peoples stories about it. I know stress can cause hair loss as well, but to lose half your hair from stress? And do you think stress can make you lose eye lashes and brows? I am trying to lessen my stress as much as possible. Started exercising again which helps me. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi Bre,

I have had hair loss as well with Humira. Not drastic, but noticeable. Everytime I brush my hair, tons of strands in the brush. Nevermind the shower…

I started juicing for breakfast daily. Spinach, carrots, cucumber and either apple or orange. It has slowed down tremendously, now I just see natural loss. Spoke with my GI about this and the juicing is great because my body is able to absorb all these nutrients via the liquid that I normally don't get because of crohns.

Everyone is different, but I thought I'd try this because it wasn't putting any additional meds into me and the Humira seems to be working on my fistulas.

Good luck.

I started drinking shakes for breakfast as well. But mine consists of a banana, protein and almond milk. I should throw some spinach in there as well. I try to eat spinach every day. I actually stopped humira 2.5 months ago so I'm hoping the hair loss will stop. It seems to have slowed down some. I definitely think our bodies absorb liquid better. I just can't imagine an all liquid diet. I'm glad to hear humira is helping you. It did put me into remission but I was having way too many side effects. I've lost half my hair, easily. And it's absolutely devastating :( thank you for your reply:)

How is the crohn's since you've been off Humira? Are you on any other medications?

I can't imagine how you feel. It devastated my Mom when she went through chemo and she still has only got half of it back. I will tell you, what I tell her, that her hair only masked her true beauty. Honestly, I think she is absolutely beautiful!

So far so good!! I am on mezavant (lialda) I believe is the name of it in the states. I was ok asacol for 3 years and did well on it. I don't expect to get all of my hair back. All that matters to me at this point is that it stops. It's kind of nice not having super thick hair like I used to. If you didn't know me you wouldn't know. I have no bald spots thus far! Chemo would be very tough. Thank you for your kind words!! I couldn't imagine losing all of my hair though:(

Glad to hear that all is well!! I had allergic reactions to asacol and am on Pentasa and Humira.

Wish you the best of luck!!!

I'm glad pentasa is working well for you. It's a 5ASA like asacol so you're lucky you're not allergic to it as well:) thank you and I wish you the best of luck as well!!

Hi Bre. Iv been on humira for aprox a year and a half, and in the past couple of months, have had heaps of hair loss. I had a horrid bout of eczema, and had sores all over my scalp, and started loosing handfuls of hair. I never had eczema before, and that also can be a side effect of humira :/ I started taking folic acid, and it seemed to lessen the hair loss, then recently I'm noticing more hair loss, so just started folic acid again. I have very thick hair, normally can barely wrap my fingers around my hair, and its 1/3 what it used to be. My gi said its lack of nutrients so I'll start taking vitamins again, but juicing sounds great too, as if I have too much fiber my bowels don't cope well. I think like with azathiroprine, it takes like 6 months before humira is completely out of your body- or 3- not sure, but maybe try folic acid. Hope it helps :)

Hi Irene!
I was on azathioprine for 5 months and I think that's when the hair loss began..I came off that hoping it would stop but was immediately put on Humira and the hair loss just continued!! I am sorry to hear about your hair loss..it is so upsetting to say the least! I do take a B12+folic acid supplement, but I must admit that I have been forgetting lately!! I also take 5000mcg of biotin, just started that a week ago so hoping that helps soon!! At first I thought it was the lack of nutrients causing the hair loss but I'm not having any crohn's symptoms at the moment (knock on wood) so I'm hoping it's not that. I also had major eczema after starting humira!! I would get the sores and major dandruff. That seems to be slowing down a bit now..I even get it in my eyebrows!! It is crazy how may bad side effects a drug can cause!!! Have you had your zinc levels checked? I was deficient in zinc for a while which can also cause hair loss so I started supplementing and now my level is in the normal range but the hair is still coming out so I will continue taking the zinc. It's a pain taking all of these vitamins!! I hope things turn around for you. As if it's not bad enough to have crohn's, we also have to go through hair loss..not fair!! best of luck to you!
