just been in hospital for tests after having flare ups of my crohns, they initially thought I may have to have an operation, but decided to put me on humira. I am due for my first 4 injections on the 20th feb. here is my dilemma.I am due to go on a 10 day cruise to the canaries on the 6th of march, how long after having the injection could I expect to start having any side effects. my IBD nurse is concerned about the trip but the consultant is not so bothered.
Just wondering what reactions people have had and how long before they start..
thanks.

It varies. Most people don't have any negative reaction. Some have it immediately, others after several shots.

An allergic reaction is unlikely the first time because your body isn't used to it. It's the second dosage that you have to be on the lookout for allergy or negative side effects.

If you're having your shots on Feb 20th, it gives you at least a week before you head out. Allergic reactions occur fairly quickly (within the first 24 hours). One of the things I would do is take a Benadryl before my injection to stave off any allergic reactions. I didn't have a reaction to Humira, but I did with Remicade. There are very few instances of delayed reactions, but it is known to happen. Again, you'll likely know well before you go on your holidays.

I once had a delayed reaction to Remicade (7 days after my infusion). My symptoms were severe pain in my jaw, shoulders and knees. I dosed myself up with Benadryl and the pain went away the next morning. My gastro wasn't convinced that it was a delayed reaction...

I hope you'll be able to get away on your trip! I would recommend taking antihistamines with you!

Cheers,

Kismet
