My Crohns has spread and my Dr wants to start me on Humira. I have only been on Pentasa. Shouldnt I start Imuran or 6mp.

I'm on Humira, have been for 12 months. I took 6mp but it didn't agree with me. Never tried Imuran. I think Humira is brilliant!! Has done me wonders when I get it! Have they tried you on anything else other than Pentasa?? Like Remicade or anything? To put you straight on Humira sounds a little strange to me?

I was put directly on Cimzia, which is similar. The original plan was to do imuran, but once the doc saw the extent of damage, he decided on cimzia.

I went directly to Remicade, and now onto Humira. Never Imuran or 6mp. I guess it depends on the symptoms, and how severe your case is. So far so good on Humira. Hopefully it will work for you too. Good luck.

I went from pentasa straight to Humira. I think Imuran typically takes about 3 months to kick in, if at all, and my doc didn't want to chance it. Humira started working for me 6 days after the first injections, it was amazing.

humira with 6 mp would be great, but if your doctor prefers it otherwise Humira is definitely a great option to attack this condition.

If you have a fistula then it is appropriate to get the big guns out so to speak. The biologics are best to treat fistulas.

I actually developed a fistula while I was taking the medications that are supposed to treat/prevent them.

Humira was the first medication I was put on immediately after my diagnosis because I had fistulas. I felt significantly better upon starting it, but after a couple months it wasn't strong enough and they had to increase me to the weekly shots. They put me on steroids and started me on 75 mg of Imuran on top of the Humira. After about a month, I weaned off the steroids and have only improved with time! My doc doesn't plan on increasing Imuran for me at this time.

Mary - has your doc mentioned going on something like aza or 6 mp? OR were you asking because you were wondering if something like would be better than going straight to Humira?

Docs usually want you to immediately start a TNF blocker when you've developed fistulas. Sometimes fistulas can form after or while on TNF blockers, but that can be because you need a higher dose of the TNF blocker (ie taking Humira weekly instead of every 2 weeks). I've actually heard more people recently say they're switching to weekly shots and feeling a LOT better.

Have you read MikeInBklyn's latest post? He was having a hard time with fistulas and started Humira. Then they would heal and come back right before the 2 week mark. So, his doc bumped him up to the weekly injections and his fistulas finally closed up! It can happen. :)
