For the last day or two I've been hurting. Almost feels like constipation/gas. I've barely used bathroom ( was using it all the time!) but when I do it's soft. Still be constipation? Feels like gas in my upper stomach and in my lower tummy feels like constipation. Took some Miralax, but any other tips or advice? I haven't even started treatment for my Crohn's yet. Just diagnosed Friday. Hopefully starting Remicade next week or so.

Hi,
Sorry to hear you are going through pain - what did the doctor tell you? Do you have a severe case?

Yeah. I was told I had inflammation in my small intestine and colon as well as fluid build up due to an abscess. I also have perianal disease. A few days ago I was just wishing I'd stop going to the bathroom so much but now I wish all I could do is have a good bowel movement :(

Right now they are keeping an eye on it. I have an MRI on the 28th to check it again. During colonoscopy he said it wasn't bad enough to drain and are hoping the round of antibiotics I finished last week and the remicade will heal it.

You should include some pancreatin and ox bile (digestive supplements) with every sit-down meal you have. Stay away from any food with added sugar, and NO fruit (except some dried organic black botija olives every now and then). Eat organic produce as much as you can (vs conventional). More importantly include more cooked vegetables in your diet (8-9 cups each day). this will give you some much needed fiber, and try to minimize the grains you eat (oatmeal, quinoa, etc).

I am not sure about increasing the fiber just yet. You have mentioned perianal disease, and if you have significant narrowing an increase in fiber could lead to an obstruction. Please keep in mind that most of us are not medical professionals, but as someone who has obstructed on a pill cam study I am leery of jumping to more bulk as a response.

Did your doc not start you out on some prednisone immediately? Even when starting remicade (I am on it and am extremely thankful!) I had pred to help it out. It often shows results really quickly. Give your doc a call and see what he can do for you while you wait. If you continue to have problems related to constipation such as extensive bloating, no movements for an extended period, vomiting, head to the emergency room please.

While remicade hasn't worked for all who have tried it, it is a very good med for crohn's and can work very quickly for some. Fingers crossed that you are one of those for whom it does.

Fiber is only good if you don't have narrowing due to strictures or inflammation. I know too much fiber caused me to be hospitalized for 5 days with an obstructions. Also, just a couple tablespoons of white beans caused a partial obstruction that lead to my resection surgery being moved up. It's very individualized as to how much and what type of fiber is tolerated. When I had my stricture beans, broccoli, onions caused horrible pain while spinach, green beans, carrots, zucchini I had no problems with. Everyone has to figure out what works best for them by slowly introducing the food and gauging their reaction.

Taking too many pancreatic enzymes can lead to problems with your large intestine. Scarring can occur, which is called fibrosing colonopathy. This will cause stomach pain, cramping and bloody diarrhea according to David Orenstein in "Cystic Fibrosis: A Guide for Patient and Family." Scar tissue develops, if high doses are continued, but lowering dosage of enzymes remedies the problem. If the scarring is severe enough, surgery is used to remove scar tissue.

Do not take pancreatic enzymes unless you have been instructed to do so by your doctor
If your pancreas is working fine and you supplement levels could become high and cause major issues ( see above )
