I have been on prednisone 60 mg for 9 days and I basically no response and will be tapering to 50mg starting tomorrow. Has anyone taken very very long to respond to prednisone? How long did it take you? Is it hopeless for me or might I still show improvements as I taper down?

Have you had Prednisone before?
The reason I ask is that I have noticed many times on the forum people say as they have each subsequent course it doesn't kick in as quickly.

My son didn't have any apparent response to oral Prednisone either. He had none of the expected side effects except when he was in hospital on IV Hydrocortisone. As he tapered the oral Pred he had no issues but then it didn't kick in either. I don't know if it did anything or not but since, in combination with his other meds, his condition stabilised I assume that it did play some part in evening things out for him.

Pmitra, it took me a while before I saw any improvements. In fact, I think I was on Prednisone for about two weeks and then my symptoms started to clear up. Don't give up! It may just take your body a while to get used to the drug.

Sending well wishes~

My initial dose of prednisone kicked in right away and I saw immediate improvement. But with each subsequent time it was prescribed, it took longer and I needed a higher dosage. I would talk to your GI about tapering, because I know that my GI would tell me to stay at that dosage (although 60mg is quite a high dose). Whenever I taper, if my symptoms start to return, my GI has instructed me to increase my dosage back up for an additional week. Sometimes it takes many months for me to taper all of the way down. Are you on any additional meds?

I'm in my 4th week of pred and no improvement at all. Its only been worse for me, bleeding like crazy. Going to see a colorectal surgeon on Friday. Between the Pred, Canansa, Cortifoam and Lialda - it seems to me none of these meds are reaching the inflamed areas....I am wondering if I should be tring some kind of enema before handing the keys to my colon to a surgeon.

Prednisone won't help you with healing, just reducing some symptoms. A prednisone only course of treatment won't help. Has the doc added anything else like an imunosupressive?

Enemas do help for the bleeding for my kid. We have tried a couple and recommend cortifoam as it gets up higher then the suppository and doesn't burn like the liquid.

Every time my kid goes on prednisone it takes a bit longer to kick in but never 4 weeks, especially at such a high dosage. Communicate with your doc. There may be other oral steriods you could take. Doesn't hurt to ask.

I feel your pain barelyalive. Recently diagnosed I had been on prednisone for 2 weeks along with lialda. if anything I was feeling worse. Lot of bloody D and just feeling like complete crap. I called my GI 2 days ago he says don't taper off the 40 mg yet. Increase the lialda and he ordered me some rowasa enemas. Today the blood seems to be lessening finally. I would ask for the enema. The crohns or colitis (not sure yet) I have is in the lower colon and rectum so it can be reached by the enema. Couple months ago I was fine. Now it feels like I can barely keep my head above water. Freaking screwed up disease.
