I had an interesting conversation with the Roo's locum GP today. He was telling me about the risks of Imuran and Allopurinol. Apparently Allopurinol intereferes with the metabolism of Azathrioprine causing plasma levels of 6mp to increase. The result is, it has the potential to wreak havoc with bone marrow production causing it to become life threateningly suppressed.
The combination should be avoided at all costs but if it is absolutely necessary then the dose of Imuran should be reduced to 25% of the recommended dosage and bloods monitored meticulously.
I have noticed a few members are on both of these drugs and wasn't sure if you were aware of the risks. It is a double whammy considering those with ileal crohns often have issues with higher uric acid levels which can cause kidney stones and gout.
Dusty.
