i've been having crohns symptoms for 7 months now, still waiting for a DX, but... i have smoked almost every night for 8 years because of muscle/joint pain from my AS. The last few months, I have stopped smoking because I thought it was adding to my symptoms and causing a bit of laziness, but since i have stopped, i have lost more weight and my symptoms have gotten worse.

I can see now, that when I was smoking, i ate more, and my gut pains/grumbles/restroom trips were not as severe.

thanks everyone for your posts, its making sense now

I had exactly the same experience.

I've had crohn's for 20 years and been using mj more and more regularly since my surgery in 2000. When I look back I realize that the times when I was struggling with my crohn's most were during the times when I had quit pot, normally cause I thought it was bad for me. Whenever I would go off it I would wake up 3 or 4 times during the night to use the restroom and would have a hard time falling asleep in between. I would blame this on "marijuana withdrawal". But when it didn't go away after a few weeks or months I would end up starting my vape routine again, and would always feel better.

For some reason I never made the connection that it was actually helping relieve my symptoms make me healthier.

Cool. Doctors are very fast at dismissing MM because they think you're masking the pain, but after reading many studies about it, that's not actually what's going on I think, it's lowering the inflammation.

The small intestine is full of opoid receptors, they are all elevated in crohn when they check tissue, when you smoke / use cannabis you are lowering the inflammation through the opoid receptors.

(oh yes, I'm not saying that some aren't using it to mask pain btw, but it is not as simple as some make it out to be, those opoid receptors are important in crohn and MM has a beneficial effect on them)

Don't forget Kiny, there are thousands of other approved drugs out there that only "mask" the symptoms they are taken for.

Does insulin cure Diabetes? No.

Does Vicodin cure the pain? NO, but it makes it go away while the body heals itself to the point where there is not pain (in most cases).

Does Depakote cure epilepsy? No but it can stop seizures or reduce them.

Do blood pressure drugs cure high blood pressure. No but they drop the pressure.

Does ... yada yada yada :)

Very good point point Jessiegrrl!

And that's some interesting note kiny, I want to see if I can find some more studies about marijuana and Crohn's. Having a very hard time trying to convince others of it's medical capabilities. ><

I was skeptical about my medical marijuana usage too. I used for 4 years and was symptom and pain free! Recently I took a one month break and all the symptoms returned.

Glad that I'm not the only person that has experienced a flare after halting MMJ usage.

I too have had the same kind of experience.

Where I live, Marijuana is illegal. I've been using it a lot of the time over the last 5 years, and every single time I stop for any sustained period, my Crohn's flares up. I can barely eat, the sickness is terrible and I barely have enough energy to get out of bed.

But now I can't risk getting a criminal record, even though it really does help my condition. So as a lot of us, I'm left pondering whether I want to be a law abiding member of society, or a 'junkie' in the eyes of society, but a junkie who has a considerably better standard of life.

I think for me, one of the most beneficial parts of Marijuana is the feeling of the reduction of stresses, which in turn removes stress induced flares.

I recently returned to MM after 8 years of abstinence. I have been a recovering opioid/pain pill addict during this time, and in the interest of remaining pill free, I gave up using Marijuana also. MM has been, and still is, the best medication I have ever used for controlling my Crohn's symptoms. For those who are interested in strains, I am giving a thumbs up to Blue Dream, an indica/sativa blend. Relaxes the gut, gives the body a feeling of wellness, doesn't induce freakish munchies.

Never smoked. Has anyone had any relief from edibles? Not avail. yet in CT but next year. Just suffer in the meantime.

I keep some edibles in my freezer. They definitely do the trick--better than vaporizing. The effects last longer too.

Its definitely the most effective treatment of alleviating symptoms or toilet trips iv ever used. Gives me control of how many times I needa go, I plan on using it for the rest of my life if need be haha. One of God's miracle herbs

Could you please tell me how to make edibles?

To make edibles you first need to extract the CBD and THC out of the marijuana plant. THC and CBD are both liposoluble molecules, which means if heated they will attach to a fat molecule given the chance.

This is was people refer to as cannabutter or cannaoil. I made cannaoil recently for an oatmeal cookie recipe and I tried it. Took pictures too, to help others. I've attached the pictures and this post here.

So I made some cannaoil today. I've never made edibles and have no idea how I will react but I am anxious to try it. Doc says edibles work much better on IBD patients than inhaling smoke or vapor.

The chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe I want to try calls for oil, so I made cannaoil. If recipe had called for butter I'd have made butter.

1. Measured a cup of oil

2. You will need a few grams of cured buds
cannaoil-step2.jpg

3. Throw the buds and oil in a crockpot (slowcooker) and cook it on low for 8-12 hours. Alternatively, you can cook it in a saucepan on the stove but make sure temperatures don't go over 350 and if you do only cook it for 30-45min.

4. Once the color is amber

5. I filter the oil with two layers of cheese cloth

6. I'm left with the amber colored cannaoil. I didn't cook the oil long enough, so yours should be darker.

Then use that oil (or the butter) to make any recipe you wish. If you're making brownies that ask for 1 cup of butter, use 1 cup of cannabutter instead.

Here's how my cookies looked like in the end:

I haven't tried cannabutter yet but will do soon. Here's a popular recipe with pictures: here

Any oil will do. I prefer coconut oil for cooking MMJ edibles. It's not as healthy as canola or vegetable oil but I don't eat a lot of it and it makes everything a lot more tasty.

I must have used about 7g for 1 cup.

Shiiit, 7g that's 80 bux here, expensive cookies haha, can u smoke the buds after? Guess they wouldn't have much goodness left in them anyway

Looks great but certainty exceeds my knowledge and abilities at this point. Hopefully at some point we can walk in somewhere and buy a dozen.

Thanks for the info.

No, you cannot. Once the buds are cooked you've effectively extracted all the molecules you'd need to help with your gut.

You can certainly use less. I've been vaporizing multiples times a day for months now, so I am very tolerant of any psychoactive effects and the cannabis I now have has low CBD content.

I will repeat the experiment with a medical strain later and with less.
