I had a colonoscopy and the inflammation was only present in the rectum and 25 cm in the sigmoid. I was speaking with the doctor about this and he said that I had patches of inflammation.

I was to understand patches only occurred in Crohns, and UC spread evenly upwards. So am I wrong, can you have patches of inflammation in UC, and only have it in the rectum?? Just wondering if anyone else has this situation??

Hi,

I'm sorry this is a little vague, someone who I work with has UC & he told me he had patchs of inflammation in 2 bends in his colon with ulcers inbetween so I assume from him saying that, that you can :)

You are right that patches generally signify crohns whereas UC is in a continuous formation. This is the general rule but they estimate that a small but sizeable population has indeterminate IBD and that could mean that there are some who are hard to pinpoint in terms of disease progression.

Thanks guys that helps, I had a response from another forum which said it could be because I was using the rectal meds, and they may not coat evenly.. Do you think that could be the reason?? I presume if it was crohns it would have come up on the biopsies, and also be in the ileum.

That sounds logical. The biopsies would likely point more towards Crohn's, although it would not need to be active in the ileum by any means. What does your doctor say on the matter?

He said nothing about it, other than the inflammation seen was patchy. I should have interrogated him more :)
