Inflammation shown on colonscopy biopsies?

Hi,

Was wondering what does it mean if they have found inflammation on the biopsies taken during a colonscopy?

On a somewhat different note can IBD cause fluid to build up? I'm asking because i had to have emergency surgery to drain fluid and nobody is totally sure what actually caused it?

Thanks :)

Inflammation means you are flaring up generally. What is your diagnosis? And Tate you on meds for it? If so you may need different or stronger meds as the goal is to prevent inflammation.

Hi,

I don't actually have a diagnosis annoyingly so currently I'm not actually taking anything for the inflammation. The general 'flare' does seem to be getting worse though (currently, I can't eat anything without vomiting). Ended up in hospital last week due to severe dehydration and then the fluid build up so just a bit worried that I might end up having to go back.

Many thanks for your reply

I don't think IBD typically cause fluid build up, though I can imagine that some IBD complications might. Was the fluid build up in your abdomen?

Inflammation in the colon can be caused by many different things, but a gastroenterologist should be able to tell from the biopsies whether it is due to Crohn's, UC, or other causes.

Are you due to see a consultant about it?

I know how emergency surgery can leave you feeling a bit in shock and wondering what happened. All the focus has been on getting you stable and you may well never have even met your surgeon before. But soon they should be arranging follow-up appointments for you, when you should be able to get some answers about what has happened to you and whether you'll be needing further treatment.

Do see a doctor if you think things are getting worse. It's better to try to stop problems before they develop too far, and hopefully avoid another emergency.

when are you going to have a fallow up with a Gastro-enterologist doctor? that seems a priority in your case. returning to the emergency is not a bad idea considering you feel getting worst. being unable to eat and vomit every time is no good. I dont hesitate to go to the emergency when something goes wrong and my GI is unavailable. best wishes.

I have an appointment next week but it is now developed today that i am unable to tolerate liquids again! The problem I now have is that every time i'm vomiting its pulling on my stitches from the surgery I had done a week ago. I'm just worried they will consider me a nuisance if i go back considering I was only there last week!

Many thanks for your reply

Hi,
The fluid was in my abdomen from what i can understand (3 different surgeons all said different things). I saw a doctor on monday about the sickness but it has got worse so I am concerned about dehydration considering I now cannot drink!

I do have a consultant appointment next week so I will see how that goes and will hopefully have some answers!

Thanks for your reply

i feel it may be best if a nurse can evaluate your situation at the emergency. let the specialist take that decision. thats how it goes here at the emergency, we see a nurse first. You are far from being a nuisance. You are a patient who has recently been through a lot and now you have new symptoms and worry about your stitches, that is all fully deserving of a screening at the ER.

Better to be thought you're a nuisace than to collapse from dehydration (or anything else).

But when you've recently had surgery, doctors know there's a possibility for complications, so it's very unlikely they won't take you seriously. Emergency doctors don't just treat emergencies, they also determine whether or not a problem is an emergency, so if you're unsure about whether something serious is wrong, you can ask them to decide.

If you literally mean you can't drink, as in you can't keep water down, you definitely need to go to hospital.
