Hi everyone, thanks for taking a minute to read my story and offer any tips.
Background- diagnosed 2003 with Crohn’s and started on asacol. I have been on meds since and starting in fall 2008, things progressively got worse. My Dr. is a prescription addict so each 6months it seems like I start a new drug. I currently am on Pentasa, entocort, immuran, and humira. My symptoms are mainly abdominal pain and occasional blockages due to 1 large stricture and a few minor ones. Anyhow, I was a diehard believer in the meds until more issues this June. A colonoscopy and upper bowel xray showed increased degree of blockage. The meds aren't doing anything for me and I wanted to do something that healed the intestines and not just treated the symptoms.
On July 10th I started the SCD diet (redundant?) I cold turkeyed the meds after I completed the intro diet. The last 5 weeks on the diet have been amazing. My energy levels are up and I haven't had any bloating, abdominal pain, or any Crohn's related issues. I was able to work 5 wks without any issues (and being in straight commission sales, this was awesome!).
Well, Sunday night, I had a huge blockage. I didn't eat anything off the diet, introduce any new foods, or eat anything too bulky. The blockage was more painful this time and lasted a full 24 hrs. It's still partially blocked but I can eat some softer foods now. I saw my Dr yesterday and he isn't a fan of doing any particular diet. His thoughts are to either increase my humira to weekly or take that part of the intestines out. I don't like his indecisiveness and unwillingness to discuss natural ideas. I am requesting a visit to a specialist in Chicago.
My questions- was this just a hiccup or is SCD not much of an option for me? Do I stay on the meds while still on the diet? Or when do I quit the meds. How do you talk to your Dr about natural remedies so you don't have to live on drugs. Or do you accept what this is and live on 4 drugs forever?
Thanks for your help.
