Hi I seen a sign outside of a disabled toilet next to a cafe saying only to be used by disabled people no abled bodies? Is that allowed what if I have a problem and need to change it. I'm not in a wheelchair so would they stop me using it? x

Does it belong to the cafe and do they not have toilets for everyone else? I think by law of somewhere sells food or drink to consume on the premises they have to have public toilets.

I guess the only way to know if they'd stop you is to try it for yourself. If you have problems, I know that Crohn's and colitis uk and ostomy suppliers have 'toilet' cards that you could show them to avoid explaining things.

No there was only one toilet that one and I don't have a card coz I've got a stoma so don't think i'm entitled to the card correct me if i'm wrong plz. I've got a radar key tho and that toilet had radar key access only. x

Yeah I know for sure that dansac have a card for using toilet facilities. I'm sure the other manufacturers do them too.

Ah right didn't know thought it was for only if you have crohns and colitis thanks. I still think the sign wasn't right abled bodies you don't have to be in a wheelchair to have a disability. It got me angry xx

"disabled" or not, employee's only, etc. If there's an unused bathroom in sight and I need to go, I'm going lol. Just think if they were to complain about you using the bathroom how stupid they would sound.

I would definitely use it.

Able bodied, in the true sense of the definition, means having a strong and healthy body. If your body is not strong and healthy then you can use the toilet! If there was an issue with the owners of the toilet I would point out what able bodied means and under the definition you don't have one. :)

The ASCA (Australian Council of Stoma Associations) issues a card, through our local stoma asscoiations, that says "The owner of this card has a disability of a Stoma and may be required to use a disabled toilet for the management of his/her condition."

I always carry it with me but haven't had the need to show it yet, although I do use the disabled toilet when necessary.

It would be worth checking whether there is such an association in the UK and if they have a similar card.

In Australia you have to belong to a stoma association to get your supplies. The annual joining fee is about $50-$55. The card comes with your membership, as does an "URGENT CAN'T WAIT" one that comes from the Australian Crohn's & Colitis Association.

You would need to enquire whether there is a local equivalent and, if not, get the the UK ostomates to put pressure on to get one.

I have just found this in a UK Ostomy site:

"One thing that has just started here that I think is excellent is that the UK Ostomy Association in partnership with Disability rights has started issuing Photo ID cards saying that we have had an operation that may require our using toilet facilities (including disabled) urgently. To get one it's neccassary to produce evidence Doctor's letter e.g. I use disabled toilets because regular ones are just too small to lay out what one needs and the ID card certainly stops arguments before they start."

HERE

It's dated 12 August this year, so seems to be just introduced.

This is a part of the scheme...

The Colostomy Association are also offering an optional photo ID card for those who would like to support their use of the key. The wording on the card states: “The cardholder has a medical condition and needs urgent access to disabled facilities”. This new photo ID card has been endorsed by Disability Rights UK and will bear only their logo. To obtain a photo ID card at a cost of £6.50, please download the declaration form above. These photo ID cards are only available through the CA.

I have the Australia Crohn's & Colitis "Can't Wait Card", but I haven't had to use it yet!

Personally, if there is a toilet in front of me and I need it - I will use it. Doesn't matter to me if it is disabled, female or male - I have no shame!

The UK NACC give one out when you become a member (cant remember how much it costs), or you can buy one from the bladder and bowel association for £5.

Ive used disabled toilets quite a few times (quicker to get to or the males have been full), ive never had anyone complain yet but if I do expect them to get a gob full :p

Agree with Dusty here.

Also, don't think it's been mentioned in this thread, but many of the disabled toilets in the UK use a RADAR key. I was given one by my stoma delivery company. Might be worth picking one up.

I found that when I had a stoma the disabled toilets were a lot more user friendly as there was plenty of space to lay out the changing kit. I still use them today if the gent's are too busy cos we all know that when a Crohnie's got to go that's it. I've never been challenged but if I does happen I think I'll give a vivid description of what the problem is using terms that are usually confined to this forum.

A few years ago I read of a case where a cafe had taken over some public toilets and closed them down. A disgruntled former user saw red and threw his full colostomy bag into the crowded cafe. At the time I didn't really understand the finer points of the story but now that I do and I reckon he went a little far!

Wow that was a bit far I wouldn't do that lol but when your angry you say/do anything and I bet he regretted it afterwards lol

You certainly are allowed to use a disabled toilet, they have their own private sinks. I very much doubt anyone is jobsworthy/rude enough to assume that you're not disabled enough for their toilet based purely on your appearance :)

Thanks I wouldn't think either but you never know my grandad went to use it before coz he couldn't wait bless him and they told you can't so he had to wait and use one else where. It's just absolutely ridiculous. He never had a stoma either. As I said above disabilities aren't always visible I wouldn't go down the route of showing them my stoma lol just to prove my point.

You should contact you Stoma Nurse of stoma suppliers such as fittleworth or Bullens (0800 269 327) they will post a CANT WAIT card to show so you can use the toilet even in stores that dont have a public toilet such as clothing stores. Even if you dont have a stoma yet and are out in public and need urgent use of a toilet crohns patients can get them too!

Free of charge and they (if they dont already!) deliver all your stoma supplies direct to your door free of cost to most UK adresses. They have been a life saver for me and have call centre support with people who know what they are talking about. When stuck abroad once they delivered to my hotel in Portugal whilst on holiday when the volcano grounded the flights.

Fittleworths are brilliant. When the snow was at its thickest and nothing was out on the roads the Fittleworth delivery man still made it through in his usual little van.

Clairelkeat I've already got my stoma and fittleworths are brilliant couldn't ask for a better service. I like the guy who delivers them too lol :D they always happy to help you if needed xx
