I've been on Prednisolone for four weeks, starting at 30mg and tapering off by 5mg every week. It was working really well to start with - I felt happy, wasn't experiencing any bad side effects, no abdominal pain or D, I actually felt like I did before I ever got Crohn's.

After the first week I started taking Azathioprine and after the second week a one-week course of Flagyl as well. While I was on the Flagyl I noticed that a perianal abscess (which it was supposed to help with) that I have was feeling a lot worse than it had been while I was on the Pred - it had gone down, but swelled up again and started to give me some discomfort.

I came off the Flagyl this Tuesday and also got down to 15mg of Pred. Since then I have felt awful. I had to take Tuesday off work because I was exhausted from the moment I woke up, I was having abdominal pains again, the D is back, the abscess is very painful and I also now feel constantly light-headed. I called my doctor, who put me back on 25mg of Pred and told me to taper off by 5mg every 2 weeks instead, but it doesn't seem to be working. I have hot flushes and sweat all the time as if I have a fever (although the thermometer doesn't show one). Last night I kept throwing up. I'm off work again today with bad D, dizziness, fatigue and abscess pain. I tried to sleep this morning but woke up with the sheets soaked through and shivering (temperature still normal).

I am at my wits' end. I'm so annoyed with myself for getting sick again and I don't understand why I don't feel better - the Pred only took a day to start working when I first started taking it, so why has upping the dose again not helped? I don't want to keep taking time off work and worrying my partner with all these weird symptoms :( Is it possible for steroids to just stop working?

Oh no! Hope you feel better soon! I am not being treated yet because I am undiagnosed, but want to send you plenty of

Hello Weatherwax sorry you are having a hard time, I can tell you when hubby was on prednisone it did stop working for him. Maybe talk to your doctor again about another maintenance medicine. Sending :ghug: your way.

You should definitely contact your GI about this. One of the side effects of Imuran is fever. Mine were so violent my GI took me off it & replaced it with methotrexate. Check with your GI. Good luck!

When I tried tapering off pred after a week of Imuran it was all bad, lasted 3 days then back to my original dose. Even so I still didn't get back to my baseline level of health when I was on prednisone until about a month after my failed taper, don't know why, since pred acts fast but it took me a while even after putting my dose back up. Hope you start feeling better soon. Sorry to not be much more help.

Yes, get in touch with the doctor again. You may be having an adverse reaction to the azathioprine. (I did.) Stick with the Prednisone. It may take longer to work, after the initial 'honeymoon' when your body was first introduced to it. The doctor should know about your wild symptoms.
