I have no idea what's going on. I was doing well until about last thursday and all of the sudden I can't seem to get enough sleep no matter what I do. I slept from about 10:00pm last night until 7:00pm tonight .. nearly 24 hours. It's almost like I started feeling after I started the Imuran last year. I'm certain it's not depression although the fact that I'm sleeping so much is depressing in and of itself.

Currently just on Humira and I don't think that's it. Bowels and such are going down hill again so maybe that's part of it ..

ugh this sucks

meh, I'm sorry to hear that!
I know what sleep deprivation can do. It sucks! The brain just stops finctioning.
Doesn't help when the bowels don't feel good. Sleep gives the body a chance to heal,
can't sleep, can't feel better :(
have you talked to your doc about it yet? maybe he can give you something
to help you sleep?

Well no I'm having the opposite issue Cass, I'm sleeping all the time, not up all the time. I have a had couple days where i had trouble sleeping but mostly it's been I'll be up for a couple hours, maybe 4 or 5 then I'm just exhausted all over again.

damn that sucks drew.

i've been trying to find you a kitty, until then, i dont know what to say....

pred in your coffee?
(disclaimer - pred in coffee is just a joke if anyone new to this site reads this. do not try this trick at home, it will make your coffee taste really really aweful!)

It could be a sign of withdrawal. PM withdrawal. I'll try to fix you up...

(seriously - call your doc, take a multivitamin, get your blood levels checked)

I would definitely get blood checked... I was sleeping that much when I was really anemic even on Pred. I would sleep for 14 hours, be up for 2 or 3 to get to class and then go and nap again until i had to get up for another class and then id be up long enough to do homework and then I'd be napping from 3pm-8pm, wake up for 2 hours to watch tv and go back to bed.

I'm just picturing a little dog draggin his itchy butt on the carpet.

And you better watch who you're calling "hon", Pennypoo! You know how those jealous cyber-girlfriend types get! (kidding)
I switched my avatar to MBH & Drew sittin' in a tree just for that .

Hey Drew, I would have to second what Katie said - go get your blood tested. There are a lot of things that can make you sleepy, inflammation, low iron levels, b-12 deficiency etc...

I was having trouble with sleeping too much, and was having a lot of trouble staying awake whenever I sat down. (Falling asleep on the bus, with food in the oven). I had my blood tested and I'm on iron pills now and I think it's starting to help.

Drew the rheums nurse told me on the phone there isnt the same leaway with Humira as there is with remicade as they cant adjust the dose as effectively so I can see why my GI isnt keen to swap me over now...

Just wondering if you have a vitamin deficiency like I had with the Vit D that is compounding your exhaustion and gut deterioration?

Your body is obviously fighting hard to sort itself out and is asking you to sleep so it can concentrate on other things. This in itself might well be enough to sort you out so give yourself a little time honey and see where it goes..

Thinking of you ((hugs))

Iron can be a big culprit in being tired.

Here's a quote from kello's post on the iron thread-
"i remember it taking at least a few months for me to start to feel really noticably better. it seems like it works really slowly. do you get regular blood tests to check your hemoglobin and all that stuff?

if youre really anemic, have you heard about iron infusions? im actually about to have my first one tommorow. supposedly itll bring up the hemoglobin much quicker than trying to absorb in pill form. ive never had this done before, but ive heard of a few people who are really helped by it. something to look into maybe?"

Man years ago (1972?) I had what I presume to be an iron infusion... looked like a pint of black liquid... maybe Guiness... "infused" (is that the same as a drip?) They said it would save having to take iron tablets for a very long time!

lol MBH i love how you quoted me!!
what can i say? kello is as good as any wikipedia :D

drew, like the others have said, you might be anemic and should get it checked out. that would definitly explain your sleeps and the fact that youre still tired. thats how i feel when im real low.

yup agent the iron infusion is almost black. guiness lol. im gonna be getting one every week now for the anemia. wohooo

I had no choice but to quote you Kello.
I figured the more proof the better.
Drew is a man.
We have told him repeatedly on this thread to get his blood tested. Do you think he has called about that yet?
No offense meant here men, but jeez...

/runs and ducks

and then when she doesn't get hit -
/stabs Drew with a needle, holds him down while Kello takes his blood, Pen runs it to the lab, Kimberlie gets the results, Mini coop shoves some iron down his throat, and Ding says "HA! Low iron and B-12 - we TOLD you so!!!"

Kim, you can totally stab him with the needle, I will just be in charge of holding him down then! I'll sacrifice for you!! (wink)

Hey Jed a little bit. Damn a bunch of chicks working on getting my blood tested? I'm so down for that ...

I'm forcing myself to stay awake for the most part. I've got swollen lymph nodes around my jaw line now though and a stiff neck bah and the D has returned.

I hate November and December seriously...

It was this time last year I nose dived really bad.

I go to see my GI on the 15th so I'll axe for more blood tests then ...

is it because you get over excited about christmas and santa coming??

do you have the same low time before easter?

:D

Naw it's cause it's my daughter's birthday on the 23rd, christmas eve, christmas day and then the 26th is my birthday ... the holidays suck ...

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? This too can cause fatigue problems also. I'm in the same boat as you with the fatigue. Falling asleep as soon as I sit and taking naps every chance I get.

Hope it gets better for you!

I would also guess your hemoglobin is low. It makes me very sleepy. Do your palms of your hands look pale with no pink, get fatigued very easy and have a fast heartbeat? If so, you're probaly anemic. They will give you iron to replace the red blood cells lost to help create more blood and hopefully you won't need a blood transfussion if you get it taken care of SOON enough.

You know, I hadn't thought about the fast heartbeat or anything but yes indeed I do. I get really dizzy as well when I go from sitting to standing. My appointments this week got cancelled cause of snow and ice but I will ask for the iron levels to be checked or go to my GP to get them drawn since he's just up the street from me and my GI is at the Uni about 25 miles away.

Oh what a wise decision. Hmm, has anyone been telling you that for 3 weeks??

Did someone say something about drawing blood? I just got done drawing my own. I've got everything we need right here with me including a gel separator tube for a serum iron level. Unfortunately all my Spider Man and Dora The Explorer stickers are at work or we'd really be in business.

Seriously though, I know how you feel. I slept 13 hours myself. I've been exhausted all day too. We'll see if I sleep in again that much tomorrow.

If it's just once sleeping a really long time isn't much concern. If it happens twice you clearly weren't experiencing normal exhaustion the 2nd time and you need a blood count. Iron levels are handy to diagnose why you're red blood count is low and how best to fix it but ultimately a low iron level and normal RBC level won't give you anemia symptoms and could be explained by diet or other causes whereas a normal iron level and low RBCs will give you said symptoms and could be due to many things including bleeding and even an iron deficiency that is coming and going due to variations in inflammation.

Ultimately I doesn't matter because I'm sure the doctor will run a CBC and Serum Iron (and probably ferritin too) together when it comes to possible anemia but it is good to know what you're looking for when the test results come back.

As for iron supplements oral supplements aren't much use because the body has trouble absorbing high concentrations like pills. It helps some to take it with food and spread it out, but not all that much. If you already have anemia due to damaged intestines not capable of absorbing iron properly you're definitely not going to get a lot of benefit. Skipping the intestines and going right to the blood stream really is the best way to do it so don't worry too much if you have to get an iron shot/infusion. It doesn't necessarily mean you're at death's door.

I get the sitting to standing=dizzy thing too, it can be a side effect of some psychotropic drugs, like Seroquel. It's called hypostatic orthotension (spelling?), and it's basically the body trying to adjust to the new requirements for blood pressure, you basically just got up faster than your heart can cope with, more or less. I have had that for years from all the meds.

I haven't taken Seroquel in ages, I hate that stuff, makes me feel like I got shot with an elephant gun. I'm on just the Humira right now. I think its an issue with nutrition as I have found the symptoms decrease when I eat more, it's a matter of eating that is an issue though.

I saw my GI last Friday and had the B12 and Iron draws done along with a whole metric ton of other stuff tested so we'll see what that shows. The GI just listening to my symptoms and looking at my records thinks I'm deficient in one or both B12 and Iron so I am anxiously waiting on the results.

Oh my God, Seroquel is that way, but the doc says it's all she can try that's left that she says will help "stablize my moods"....I take that and it's like I've been put out for a surgery...and I am that way all the next day, and it's ridiculous because if I don't take it I can be very edgy (even if it's psychosomatic, but I doubt it after 8 years on it.) The thing is I was perfectly energized when I was in remission (which for me was what I considered 100% healthy, 1 perfect stool a day or so, no cramping, no anything)...oddly, I was still on Seroquel, but the fatigue was countered by my active lifestyle and amazingly healthy diet (tons of calories and nutrients and veggies and meats etc..)...so, Seroquel AND Crohns are why I sleep like 12 hours a day and still feel like I'm going to pass out..or, I sleep 8 hours and feel just as bad..doesn't matter...

I have to try and counter it green tea caps and flat diet caffeine soda...:ymad:

It's just lose lose when I'm flaring...

My mom takes like 3 at a time to get to sleep .. and she can still hold a complete coherent conversation. My ex had to take up to 5 of them to sleep ...

I can converse alright - the way it affects me most is physically, although, that is until I fall asleep 40 minutes after taking it. Once that happens I'm snoring not talking. I've always been a lightweight with these things, maybe because I dont drink and my body reacts differently to drowsiness, I dunno....when I had my thyroid surgery I was out very fast they said and I didnt get my gf's last "I love you" visit
