Hi, new to this. Was only diagnosed in June 09.

Things moved quickly and I had small bowel resection in August. Things are so much better and feeling pretty good. Also consultant has just left me on Codine for now and no other medication.

My main problem since th operation is that I get joint aches every day. I I sit down for more than 10 mins when I get up it takes about 5 mins to get everything working properly. Morning and evening are worse, I walk like a 90 year old!

Anyone else suffer or any suggestions?

Am due to have a vitamin b12 injection next week wonder if this will help? (Had illeum removed in operation along with 72 cm of small bowell)

Thanks all xx

So you're not on any Crohn's drugs... I'd be quizzing the consultant on why not. Something like azathioprine will help maintain remission as well as your joint pains, as would the likes of methotrexate - the DMARD of choice. However they all take time to arrange and get to work.

Have you seen a rheumatologist? They would be able to determine what sort of pains you are getting and the best treatment and/or painkillers to help you.

In the meantime how about seeing your gp for some thing a bit better. With consistent joint pain he/she may be able to prescribe patches - which I may be asking for if this back pain doesn't settle down soon!

Hi Helen,

I also like you suffer with constant joint pain in my hips and elbows! I have been perscribed anti inflamatory meds in the past but this seems to upset my bowels! so do not take this now. I also feel like a OAP in the mornings and tend to walk very stifly until I seem to loosen up! Great fun when you are trying to run to the bathroom first thing in the morning!

Isn't Buscopan an antispasmodic for IBS treatment. Wouldn't have thought it would do much for joints?

I agree with the Beth and Peaches. It will definitely cause more problems not to be on any maintenance medication. I also get joint aches and pains each day. It is tolerable for me though now. At one point when it was not as tolerable I started going in the pool more as a form of therapy of my own. I try to stay away from harsh pain meds unless when its really necessary though because they affect the whole digestive system.

First, Hi Helen and Welcome!
I have the same issues with you and joint pain. I'm not sure where you are located but if you can find them, I suggest Therma Care heat wraps or similar as those seem to help me knees, back and hips as does a heating pad and knee braces on the days it's really bad.

My rheumy put me back on 1 mg daily of prednisone. I can't turn over in bed, much less walk. All joints, hands, knees, shoulders, hips, etc. That's pretty hard on a violin/viola player, you know? I was taken off of prednisone 2 yrs ago, after my surgery. But with the pain, I'm lucky that 1 mg helps the way it does. The tests show negative rheuma arthritis, just some inflammation.

You should ask for some kind of anti-inflammatory medication for the joint pain. If real severe (as stated before) you may need some predisone for a while.
