Just back from the doctor.

So far, I'm trying to stay away from the prednisone. I'd rather avoid dealing with the side effects, so for now it's Asacol.

In addition to continuing on the Asacol (now up at 2.4 grams/day) which I think is a comfortable level for me presently, he's prescribed Prevacid (30G). It's supposed to help me with the pain I have just after eating (even small amounts of food are bothering me).

It's usually given to patients with stomach or duodenal ulcers. It's basically a powerful antacid.

Anyone else have any experience with Prevacid?

Oh, and I'm still waiting for my scope to be scheduled.

I take Nexium and know that I need it every day. I haven't had any bad side effects and it is similar to prevacid.

I took Prevacid for a while because I had ulceration in my esophagus. I can't really say if it helped or not because i was also on prednisone at the time, but it was a LOT better than the steroids! No swallowing. Just let it dissolve on your tongue. It has typical medicinal/artificial flavor taste and dissolves into a bunch of little "beads." I didn't think it was too bad. I didn't experience any side effects that I know of!

Good luck getting the scope scheduled.

Wow, took my first Prevacid an hour or so ago, and it's doing quite a number on the ol' gut (and not in a good way).

Don't know what's louder -- the tummy grumbles or my moaning.

Yesterday was my first day taking Prevacid. Major bloating with fairly intense pain and frequent, explosive diarrhea episodes that felt like I was an inverted beer keg. Not sure if it was a coincidence or not, or if something else is going on. Needless to say, I wasn't in any mood for an appetite.

I'm also wondering if Prevacid kills the effectiveness of things like probiotic capsules. My pharmacist had told me that calcium and iron pills lose some of their effectiveness when using it.

Today, I seem to be better. Took the Prevacid first thing in the morning, so hopefully it was just a one day thing.

Prevacid is pretty much going to make absorbing anything more difficult.
I question the wisdom of prescribing an acid blocker to someone who already has difficulty with nutrient absorbtion due to Crohn's.

I took a similar product which make me more ill. Then I used a different brand which did not make me ill, but it did not help me either. The problem turned out to be H-pylori which I resolved myself using an unorthodox method.

The Prevacid should actually make probiotics more effective as stomach acid is usually what kills the bacteria to begin with. I do not think the trade off is worth it. Especially if it is not helping your symptoms.

Today was uneventful with the Prevacid. Even ate basically the same things, so I know it wasn't that.

If it bothers me again, I'll definitely stop taking it and consult my doctor. Thanks for the heads-up.
