I was wondering if anyone had trouble obtaining life insurance due to their diagnosis of Crohn's.

I had a friend mention to me that her sister was diagnosed with Crohn's last summer and was told if she didn't have life insurance before her diagnosis she wouldn't be able to get any.

My husband and I do not have any and weren't specifically looking into any, but the bit of information made me wonder if we should (since we haven't reached a 100% diagnosis yet) if there would be serious problems obtaining any in the future.

Any insight?

My husband tried to raise my policy last year from 25,000 to ??(sorry I can't remember the amount). I was denied. I had just been hospitalized and had surgery so i figure that was part of it. I had no trouble getting the intial 25K 8 years ago. But it is a low amount, so I don't know how it works.

I would say if you dont have a diagnosis yet, try and get some insurance now.

Having said that, (I dont know where you are), in the UK, Life Insurance doesn't usually cover Crohn's specifically, but it will make it more difficult to get cover.

I recently checked my cover, and its great, but in order to get any benefit from it I would need to be permanently disabled and completely incontinent... thank god it's not got to that so far...and hopefully wont...

My sister has MS, and her insurance just paid out on it (phew), but it was an epic saga and now she can never get life insurance again.

Good luck with it - might be worth going to a broker rather than direct to an insurance co - let them do the leg work in finding you a suitable cover.

Life insurance generally only pays out to a beneficiary in the event of the policy holders death. I think we have a mix up of insurance products. Disability insurance vs Life insurance.

Maybe the terminology is different between the UK and U.S.

I think you could get life insurance if you have Crohn's, but it would be rated at a higher cost per thousand of coverage.

Disability insurance would probably be very difficult, since the odds of you being disabled from Crohn's is far greater than it being a cause of death.

Term life insurance is the way to go. Do not mix investing with insurance products.

Ah, mine is life and critical illness... So if I cork it, hubby gets a nice big lump sum - you know, settle the mortgage and some left over... But if I get any of a list of conditions like cancer or heart disease it also pays out.. It's on a sliding scale ... For example if one of my children got something it would pay about £10k, same if I lost an eyeball, but for a coma lasting more than a week it's something like £50k...

Typically IBD is poorly covered, I have to get REALLY bad before it will pay - yet if I had a melanoma the size of a pin head with no complications, I would be minted.

Hubby keeps telling me that if I would just be prepare to part with an eyeball we could get new windows on our place!

Maybe my insurance is unusual - I'm not very knowledgeable abt these things - only my own cover!

So far I have been denied by Metlife, State Farm, and currently waiting to hear back from Farm Bureau. I have gotten approval for a "high risk" policy through Fidelity, but I'm waiting to sign and finalize the app. until I hear back from Farm Bureau because there's a huge difference in the premiums and coverage amounts.

I've been denied by one of them because I had not had surgery for my Crohn's due to my stricture being as bad as it is. I was denied by another due to being on Methotrexate and Plaquenil. Who knows about the other I'm waiting on, should know something pretty soon on it.

I've even been denied any of the benefits through Aflac because of the Crohn's.

How much Home improvement could you do with, say one eye, a leg, and some fingers? Heck, I could be one industrial accident away from a home make over!

I guess insurance products are different between countries.

I was able to get it just not the price I wanted. I originally started off wanting a $250,000 /25yr term but ended up with a 100,000/20yr term for the same price.

I have to piggy back on my husbands "fringe benefits" package at work as I have been denied through outside insurance. I think I get something like $50k automatically through his work without needing a physical or to divulge my medical history.

I have a $500,000.00 policy for term life. No problems getting it because as their doctor said, "Crohns isn't that serious..." um, ok.

OBKB - you need to share that company name Farm - and I need that doc to be the one to sign off on me LOL!! How long have you had the policy?

3 or 4 years now. Farm Bureau...

They sent the nurse out to the house and everything. Then the doc faxed us a copy of his "findings" and bam..had insurance.

I just got the call today, Farm Bureau approved me for life insurance. I feel like I can finally let out a sigh of relief. Farm Bureau seems to be the one to go with.

i dont have life insurance, but i have paid for mine and my sons funeral. and i put x amount of money into his bank account each month.
