We've just found out that my son did not develop antibodies to mumps when he received his usual MMR vaccines as a child. Unfortunately, he started taking remicade in February.

We've had one Infectious Diseases specialist recommend that he have the mumps vaccine even though he is on remicade, however, ID dr deferred final decision to GI who has more extensive experience with remicade. Am currently waiting to hear back from GI.

But, am wondering...

Has anyone had a live vaccine while on remicade? If yes, which vaccine and what was your reaction?

Has anyone contracted mumps while on remicade and what was your experience with that?

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

thanks :)

With Humira - it is recommended that no live vaccine be administered.
I cannot imagine that Remicade would be any different.
I would think it would be the same for anybody taking any immune supressor.
Is your son actually at risk of catching mumps?
I haven't had the Yellow Fever vaccination as its live - and I frequently go to countries where it exists. No Yellow Fever so far (touch wood!!!)

He is at no greater risk of exposure to mumps than usual; we found out that he does not have immunity to mumps just by 'chance' when we were checking immunity levels for hepatitis and dr decided to check his immunities to MMR at the same time.

My concern is that adult males are at greater risk for complications (and being on remicade, his immune system is compromised) and that the most common period at contracting mumps is during college/university years (for which he will be leaving in September).
