Pretty sure I'm going to ask my doctor for Lomotil at my visit next week. I need to find a treatment other then Loperamide to fight my chronic diarrhea. I would greatly appreciate your input.

The only thing I have tried with great results is Questran, after my sugery it would never stop, and Questran (cholestyramine) would stop it. My sister who has UC and CD uses it too. Now I use hight probiotics and so far down to 3 bm a day. Hope this helps.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you CCSO3191 (welcome to this forum, BTW).

I "go" upwards of 12 times a day. One day a few weeks ago it was 40 times (I was basically "going" every 30 minutes of my waking hours).

Loperamide, Metamucil, Inulin, Questran -- all have limited success. On good days they "sorta" work. Plus I eat a healthy diet rich with whole grains, fruits and vegetables. At my wit's end, actually.

I'll have to ask my doctor about this Lomotil.

What other meds have you tried??? I take Questran. It works well for me. I just have a hard time taking it. Also Calcium carbonate is suppose to decrease diarrhea as well.

I currently take: Prednisone, Loperamide, Balsalazide, Omeprazole, Mercaptopurine, Folic Acid, Hemax, and Fish Oil. I'm trying to find the next step up that will control the frequency and urgency and my research seems to be leading me in the direction of the Lomotil. But before I move onto that I wanted to get feedback from the troops in the trenches. Questran is a drug I'm not to familiar with and I'll have to look into it as another option. Right now the diarrhea is my biggest problem [ by far ] and the chief thing I need to remedy.

Questran is used to treat bile salts diarrhea...It's an old cholesterol drug. I had my gallbladder removed and ileum resected...Most bile is reabsorbed in the ileum so it can cause that form of D.

Try the Questran - I have had chronic D and after my surgery I thought it would get better but did not. It is the only thing that helps bind me up so to speak - I take it before dinner or any large meal - good luck and let us know if it gets any better...

Well, so far thats 2 for Questran and zip for the Lomotil. I'll have to rethink my game plan. If anyone else wants to weigh in...

I think you should discuss both meds with your doctor...He might think it's worth trying...The Atropine component in Lomotil worries me a bit...( I kind of want you to be a guinea pig. If it works for you, then I will ask for it. Ha ha:) )

I have used Lomotil in the past, I still have a supply of it - but have recently move onto Questran. The Questran is great for me too, initially I had problems timing when to drink the solution and when to take my other medication but once I worked out a schedule no problems. I take a scant half of a sachet, mixed with water, 30 minutes before my two main meals and an hour after my other pills. The best thing is recently I have needed to get up less overnight to go to the bathroom due to the dinnertime dose, as things are slower to move through my system and more formed. In turn this has meant more sleep. Yippee!

Anyway back to the Lomotil, everytime I've taken it I've been fine, it helped. The dosage instructions say initially to have 4 tablets but I found I could get away with taking 2 and have no D for a good few hours. There were no ill effects to my knowledge.

It has been a while since I've posted on here, and I thought I'd add my experience. I have used Lomotil on and off, and it worked pretty well. What I use now has by far worked the best for me, it is Opium Tincture. From what I have been told and by research, it is mainly prescribed for diarrhea and works similar to Lomotil by slowing down the muscles. It is a controlled substance because it is opium, and I had to get a special prescription for it. I have had no problems with it.

I have read about that medication and I know it has had a lot of success however, it won't work in my case - I'm a Cop and as you might suspect Opium use, even prescribed is frowned upon due to the liabilities with deadly force issues. Thanks for your input though.

I've used Lomotil, as I have crippling urgency and frequency being my most troubling aspects with "my" Crohn's. It had worked about as good as the double dose (two 2mg tablets) of Loperamide, or maybe a little better sometimes. The thing is that they're Rx, so they're a bit more money for "ongoing" applications, long term, and since Loperamide can come in 400 pill double bottles from Costco, I just get them from there and have used them for a while to save money.

Nice to see a cop around who has Crohns, not that it's nice you have it, but nice that your existence is known to me. I have police training guides that state it is very hard to become a cop with IBD, and that the diagnosis alone can keep you out of the running. It was very disheartening to read that and read the kind of issues that bar you from even being considered. On top of that, the mere fact that I take OCD medication worried me as well.

As long as you can perform to the standards of your agency it would be discrimination. And, thats something no government entity would want to contend with.

Well the Doc did prescribe the Lomotil as well as ramp me up with a slightly higher Pres for the very short term (10 every day for 2 weeks then re-taper down to 5 every other). The combo does seem to be helping but don't know if its the Lomotil or Pred or both. I was praying for the Holy Grail but still getting the Porcelain Halo.

Don't know why, just got it in my head to try the Lomotil first. No good reason, but, if it fails to help next try will be with the Q.

Hi the Lomotil is working really well for me, now i don't go to the bathroom every 2 hours anymore. My doctor wants me to take 2 four times a day which is 8 pills a day but i only take 2 twice a day.
The only downside is that i get headaches sometimes after i take it, when it gets bad i take tylenol.
I hope it works for you.

I am a little confused about taking the Lomotil. The Rx was written as "as needed" but I was under the impression that it was to replace the Loperamide which I take as a maintenance drug. Any ideas?

Ask the pharmacy...I think you take it after each diarrhea incident but only up to 4 times per day...Double check.

My packet says 'take four initially then two every four hours until stops'. However I'd also be inclined to say check with the dispensing pharmacy. :)
