low dose doxycycline

I have long suspected that my periodontal disease is just a manifestation of my Crohn's. I have brushed twice a day and flossed everyday for as long as I can remember, and I also have had periodontal disease since before I realized I had Crohn's. Periodontal disease (at least what I have) is just chronically inflamed gums, which sounds a lot like Crohn's to me.

I'm going to start low dose doxycycline (20mg twice a day) to see whether it helps. Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic, but when taken at doses low enough that it doesn't harm bacteria, it has been show to reduce gum inflammation (see here). Instead of hurting bacteria, it blocks matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). I found lots of journal articles about elevated MMP levels with Crohn's so I'm wondering whether it might also help Crohn's inflammation (see here and here).

Anyone have experience with low dose doxycycline?

Hi,

I've been taking 100mg a day for the last 18 months for a skin condition. This is half the usual dose for antibiotic therapy. Despite, brushing, flossing and daily use of mouth wash, I still find that my gums bleed at the back.
