There are so many different studies/theories going on....even people claiming Crohn's is not autoimmune. Well, I think there are levels to that term. Autoimmune in the sense that it "auto-inflames" (due to not being able to see with the naked eye, an insult or trigger to the gut), therefore all we can "see" is that the lining attacks itself. In terms of treatment, Pentasa is called a "band-aid"...topical treatment but doesn't get to the "root" of the immune problem. But wait a minute, neither do the immunomodulators(6MP, LDN, Imuran, etc)/Biologics, since they just slap the immune system into shape (LDN) or dim it (6MP/Biologics)....so technically that's not getting to the root either, but controlling the symptoms of the gut (even if we are asymptomatic, our intestines have the symptom of inflammation...and further complications.) SO I'm reading on "the root" of IBD...several physicians are researching this (Borody in Australia, Shafran and Naser in Orlando, etc.) and it makes sense. This is exactly what I was saying 4 years ago! My problems started after eating college cafeteria food which gave a lot of digestive problems to the students, but they bounced back...I didn't. My mom (and I as well) we both suspect a bacterial component is at play. But if that's the case, then wouldn't everybody have Crohn's, who ingested the same bacteria I did? Or is there still a genetic component of having a weak immune system, allowing it to manifest?
Also...though appealing, I'd be HIGHLY skeptical of taking massive antibiotics for that long...wouldn't that cause resistance??
Has anybody cured their Crohn's with antibiotics?
