The Federal government in Australia yesterday passed the Narcotic Drugs Act, creating a national body that can issue licences to growers and regulate local crops of medicinal marijuana.
At the moment, the drug remains a "prohibited substance" but the government is well on the way to downgrading this to a "controlled substance", putting it in the same category as morphine.
When this happens, patients should be able to access locally produced medical marijuana with a valid prescription.
At the moment there are tests going in Australia for the use of marijuana in the treatment of severe epilepsy and nausea following chemotherapy. One would hope that the range of legal uses will be expanded in the near future.
