Meds and hair loss

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

I had hair loss following major surgery and have found using biotin shampoos and taking biotin
tablets seem to be helping to grow some of it back
It does take a long time and lots of patience
I am not taking the two drugs you mention and maybe someone else on the forum will be along soon with
Their experience and advice to offer
Feel better soon

I had problems with Imuran and 6MP. I think it lasted a few months, then subsided. I also find my hair starts falling out when I'm flaring. I've never tried anything for it because I'm lucky to have a dense head of hair!

Hope things slow down soon!

This has been going on for about two months. I see my GI on Thursday, so hopefully I can come off imuran since I don't think it's doing much for me. When I was on Imuran alone I shed some hair then it slowed down, but this time it seems far worse. I'm not willing to go bald for a med that isn't working.

Lam123;84036. I bought a biotin shampoo today. What dose of biotin vitamin do you take?[/QUOTE said:
I usually take the 1000microgram tablet once daily
Since it is water soluble any excess will pass out of the body in urine
Initially I was quite nervous about taking it since I have so many allergies
Since the crohn's diagnosis
However I have not noticed any problem with it and have been taking it for several months now for the second time round
The first was several years ago after an antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) anaphylactic reaction
When I encountered hair loss for the first time and it took about six months to cone back to its original thickness
Hoping for the same results this time around.

Would the imuran still be in my system? I think I remember my dr saying it takes a few months to take effect and also a few months to leave our system.

I take Humira and methotrexate. Methotrexate definitely causes hair loss but it only lasted about 4 months. Humira doesn't seem to affect my hair.

Imuran has definitely contributed to hair loss for me. Being male in my mid 40's though, it isn't really an issue. Imuran is helping keep my crohn's under control, so it is worth it for me. Hope the biotin helps out.

I also got my hair cut on the weekend which seems to be helping also. I see my GI on Thursday and I am sure meds will change, wait and see.

I had hair loss when I was on prednisone, but that was also right after I had a major flare up. Personally I find my hair thins when I have a big flare because my body is under a lot of stress, but I would talk to your doctor about it.

I started taking omega-3 pills to help with hair growth, I think they helped a little bit, and omega-3 is always good to have. The pills also made my skin a lot better so there is a positive!

hope this helps!
