I can't remember where I read it at but one of the effects of some frequencies in the microwave band can cause problems with the epithelial cells. These high frequencies are used by cell phones and towers, cordless phones, and wireless networks.

While they almost certainly do not cause Crohn's they could possibly aggrevate the condition. There is very little in the way of unbiased studies on these frequencies and the effect on the human body. The book "The Body Electric" covers the subject quite well. This may have been where I read the epithelial cell thing.

I have all three in my house but am considering eliminating the wireless network and cordless phones since I can get along quite easily without them.

I couldn't agree more with the theory. When I first got a cellphone years ago, I wore it around my waist everyday. A few months later I was in the hospital having an ovarian cyst removed on the same side I wore it.

I read somewhere that the microwave also changes the DNA of food. I'm sure that's not good for the stomach.

Huh. Just saw a bit on Good Morning America about someone who suffers terribly from electromagnetic radiation and has to wear a shield and have her house specially coated. I've often wondered at all the stuff zipping through the air from cell phones, microwaves, wireless internet, satellite TV, radio etc. I keep my phone hooked on my purse instead of my waist. I tend to wander off from the microwave while it is working -- on GMA, they showed the EMR of a microwave in action and it lit up quite colorfully. Maybe the old way of heating on the stove and cooking in the oven is best after all.

My first inclination is that the cellphone would not have enough power to boil an egg.
I think they are only two or three watts. I have heard this before but have never tried it. Do you have a copy of the conditions under which this is supposed to occur?
I have two phones and want to try it out.

I have also heard that a plant will not grow if it is watered with water that has been in a microwave. I have no plants to try that out with. At least not any my wife wants killed.

i dont know about the water and plant thing, but i saw the egg boiling in a scientific magazine a couple years ago

heres two sites that show something to that extent, although there are people in the comments saying its false so i dont know what to think anymore lol... i know when i use my cell phone too much that side of my head definetely is discomforted

I work as a telecommunication engineer. And since I graduated from university about 10 years ago I've been working with wireless equipment and using mobile phones for hours each day. 7 years ago I got Crohn's. Is it related, who knows? But I remember once I went to a Naturepath, and he told me that my work in telecommunications+a lack of vitamines in my diet, caused my Crohn's. Of course no GI agrees with this.....

Now I moved to more of a sales job, so I don't spend that much time near the equipment, but I still use the mobile a lot, although I'm trying to minimize and keep it as far from me if possible...

I guess it may be a factor in Crohn's or other autoimmune disorders. I know 2 collegues who worked with me, one had UC and the other RA...

Personally I have no doubt that any long exposure to high frequencies such as those found emitting from cordless phones, cell phones, etc cause changes in living cells.

Cooking an egg though, takes lots of energy in a short time to accomplish.

I am fairly sure the changes are not going to be positive just because I am not aware of any microwave frequencies that are known to be beneficial to humans. Either anecdotal or scientific.

Some of the variables are the length of exposure, power, and individual sensitivities.

I am more concerned with cordless phones and wireless networks since they are always on and have a range of 300 feet. We had a cordless phone by our bed which I got rid of.

I am trying to get rid of the constant exposure at home especially because both of my work places are jam packed with lots of magnetic fields and frequencies in many bands.

I don't know about nuked water killing plants, but I moved my cable box next to my 15 yr old, healthy as can be ficus tree and it started to die.

Why don't you put it by another plant and see if it does the same thing?

I love experiments like this.

radiation, plants

Kill a plant! It will be a challenge for me to purposely kill one of my plants.....but I do have one plant that an exboyfriend gave me that just won't die no matter how much I neglect it. It would be a fine specimen.

You do not have to kill it altogether. Just take care of it as you always have except for the cable box. If it starts withering, take away the cable box and if that is what is causing the problem, it should recover.

I have one of these boxes also, but the location is such that a plant would not live near it because of the lack of sunlight. Besides that, my wife can't keep even the toughest plant alive. I tell her she is the "kiss of death" to anything green. She does not disagree.

I have had only fake plants since the cats came into my life 15 years ago. I had a lucky bamboo, and one of the cats ate it -- the cat died. Who knew those aren't bamboo but a nightshade family or something? I DO now have one geranium. The cats don't eat it. I don't even have plants outside. There's two rose bushes, one crepe mrytle and some rosemary (the only bush on the planet sheep refuse to eat). Cable box & plants -- seems to be a kid's "Science Fair" project!

I know that there is suspicion around refridgerated foods and even frozen foods beause of the specific types of bacteria found on them...then I also heard that there's a specific ingredient in toothpaste which is also suspected in playing some role in triggering crohns.

:)

Let's hope enough probiotics will knock out anything that comes along . . .

Remember "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair? Food processed badly, really badly? I think we need to revisit that book -- sad since we are so technological these days.

Anyone ever studied whether people who eat ONLY kosher food get Crohn's? Better preparation? Any effect?

You ahould avoid toothpastes, that have any titanium something or Caragenen (I hope I wrote this correctly). I checked, and most commercial toothpastes have these. So maybe you should try to get one from a healthfood store. I found an Aloe Vera one, and it's OK...

I use toothpaste with Xylitol in it since I always seem to have problems with inflammation of the gums. Probably Crohn's related. Found this in a health food store.

Xylitol is a natural sugar from Birch trees. During WW II the Finns used this sugar as a substitute for cane sugar since it was in short supply. They found out that people had much fewer cavities as a result.

Apparently the Xylitol changes the bacteria in your mouth to a less destructive form so this results in better teeth.

I do not know about Kosher food, but people of Jewish descent get Crohn's more often than other groups. Maybe the ones that stray from the Kosher diet are the ones who get it. Or maybe the Kosher diet itself promotes it. It would be an interesting study.

This is why I have a food thermometer and routinely make sure I reheat refrigerated or leftover foods to a minimum of 165 degrees. Bacteria is destroyed at 160 (least my time in the food service and retail industry and watching the Food Network taught me something). And 212 degrees nothing survives, but that's also the boiling point of water. ;)

D Bergy :)

Be careful with xylitol, it's a sugar alcohol and for some people even as little as a 1/2 stick of Extra gum containing xylitol can cause D, gas and bloating.

DanSJV :)

Even with the food in your fridge being at the proper temp, what the article I read in regards to this is the fact that there are specific bacterias related to refridgerated foods in general...the fact that foods have to be kept colder then at room temp which naturally creates new forms of bacteria different from room temp foods and cooked foods....and it's these specific bacterias found on refridgerated foods that are suspected in playing a role with crohns disease, trigger wise.

:)

i have read about Xylitol causing problems in cases of Crohn's before. Thank you for bringing this up as I forgot about it.

That is why I only use the toothpaste. I do not understand why it can cause problems as the one study I read on it was all but incomprehensible as far as mechanism.

Most gum with Xylitol also contains aspertame, which I stay away from.

Best Regards

I just was told that Splenda is really really bad for anyone and everyone and should be avoided, but Xylitol is OK for anyone. Not a Crohn's specific discussion at the time.

im jewish so 95% of the food i eat is kosher, but so is the diet of my entire family / extended family but none of them have any gi problems but me

Splenda....
Ick....

I get to sleep in the bathroom if I eat or drink Splenda. I read labels now to make sure it doesn't say Splenda or Sucralose in the list of ingredients. I made the mistake once with a drink that had Splenda/Sucralose in it. Every two minutes, I kid you not. Gurgle, strange looking straight-legged cheek-clenched shuffle-run to the bathroom, explosive expulsion, back out, two minutes, repeat process.

I have quite a few rants about Splenda on my MySpace blogs.

Microwave radiation... I wouldn't lose sleep over the amount one is exposed to in a typical home. I personally find myself wondering what the long term effects of all of those addicted to their cell phones.. you know, the ones who never seem to turn off their cells.. walking, talking, texting.. will be over the next few generations. Least, it won't be like those poor members (OK, possibly not the best choice of words) of the law enforcement community who were in the habit of sitting in their patrol cars with their Radar guns sitting in their laps. The microwave radiation they gave off led to the development of testicular cancers... It's about the only direct link I've ever heard of being confirmed with radiation of that type (Did you know that those radar guns used the same band of radiation as your typical microwave oven?) Most modern household appliances are shielded and are of relatively low enuff power as supposedly not to be a significant source. I don't know how much it would take to kill a plant, but to cook an egg or boil cup of water takes a fair amount... literally 800 - 1500 watts in a typical microwave. If you wanted to 'visualize' that, find yourself a 150 watt bulb, and plug in it for a lil while... 10% of what you see is the visible energy it radiates, the rest is just heat.
Now imagine that 10 X 10... so most of your 'battery' operated devices are pretty tame by comparison. But, if you are a cell phone addict, you might want to spring for the handsfree option.. keeping the antenna as far from the cranium as possible

D Bergy,

You'll be happy to know, that the plant is in place. I'll get back to ya like a month from now.

I look forward to the results of the "Ex boyfriend plant/cablebox experiment".

I have my own plant frequency experiment going on with several Jalapeno Pepper seeds I just planted. I am going to put a simple Lahkovsky Coil around half of them and the rest have none.

A Lahkovsky Coil of this type is just a loop of copper wire that have the ends overlapped but not touching. According the Georges Lahkovsky, he cured Cancer in Geraniums using this simple coil. I have always wondered why such an intelligent man would make such a claim that could so easily be reproduced if it was not true.

I am not going to have Cancerous plants since I do not know how to induce it.
But, if the coil does anything it should make the encircled plants grow better than the control plants. This would be enough to satisfy my curiosity.

Yeah, I know I need to get a life. I have strange hobbies. But I learn things that most people do not know this way.

Did you see the mythbusters where they grew the plants? Some of them got talked to nicely, others screamed at, and others silence. It didn't matter what the attention was, but the silent treatment resulted in poorer growth. You can talk to your plants or scream at them and they like it just fine. THAT'S why the ex boyfriend plant won't die! It gets yelled at for representing the ex. The silent treatment would kill it for sure.

That is weird.

I will have to make sure I do not talk to any of them. If I do start talking to them I will have to seriously question my sanity.

Maybe I should do that anyway.

I remember that they said that playing the Heavy Metal music was actually the best. The plants were the best of all of them.

I wonder if the plants have a favorite heavy metal group also. I can see the future of gardening now. Play Led Zeppelin II for good plant growth.

Sound is made up of frequencies, and I am not terribly surprised that audio frequencies have an influence on living things. I have witnessed this myself.

Another one of those things I learned with my weird experiments.

D Bergy

Heh! Each plant type has its own musical preference.

The peas they grew thrived to Slayer (I think it was). Maybe Corn thrives to...Korn...
Maybe I'll play some Cradle of Filth for my tomatoes. ;)

My poor neighbors. ;)

Neil Young's "Harvest" album may put them into shock. You might want to stay away from that one.

I have this great CD by a group called Crack The Sky. The CD is called "From the Greenhouse." I think they might like that one rather well.

Cara and D Bergy,

You two crack me up! I'm really interested in your Lahkovsky Coil experiment. I never heard of it. I'm gonna google that later.

The From the Greenhouse CD has got to be a good one for any plant.
I won't go into the Smashing Pumpkins possibilities.

I have the book "Secret of Life" by Georges Lahkovsky. It is translated from French into English. This is where his theories and experiments are explained. His work concerned frequencies and the effects on living things.

There is some stuff on the internet, mostly bizarre things about his MWO or Multiple Wave Oscillators. Take most of this stuff with a grain of salt. He was a very perceptive man and I want to see if he is credible by doing this little experiment.
