mild crohns

Hey what's up guys. I have a question regarding treatment. I was diagnosed w/ crohn's in the winter. However I probably had it going on for at least half a year before that. Anyways, I never got it bad. It was an incidental finding early on. I only followed up months later when i had more problems. Anyways, I have been taking probiotics (garden of eden) and fish oil everyday. It def helps. I haven't tried any drugs because my symptoms are mild. Anyways, I'm debating whether to go on mesalamine(pentasa) or try the low dose naltrexone that was mentioned on the board here. My symptoms are still mild, but occasionally I gotta run to the bathroom quick! Otherwise I would no even consider taking the pentasa. What do you guys think? I feel like i should wait until my symptoms are worse to take naltrexone. (If that happens) I am thinking of switching to the VSL probiotic and seeing if that changes anything before i try pentasa etc. What other non drugs do you guys recommend? Getting the drugs won't be an issue. My father is in the medical field, and I'm a med student myself :) I'm glad I heard about the naltrexone tx for autoimmune diseases. I will def encourage that when I am a doctor myself and mention it to others :)

Like I said I have it pretty mild, but due to no long term results of naltrexone I was thinking to wait a bit and use pentasa in the meantime but the ldn is very tempting :)

Pentasa is not absorbed by the body, but serves as a "wash" over the intestines to keep the inflammation at bay. I have no side effects from it.

I also consider myself mild to moderate Crohn's, but still had an emergency resection because my bowel suddenly tore open.

I highly recommend going on the Pentasa even if your symptoms are mild right now. You want healthy bowels so they don't eventually or suddenly, as in my case, weaken and tear.

I highly recommend Entocort over Prednisone down the road should you move from mild to moderate Crohn's as I did. Entocort is still a steroid, but is not absorbed by the entire body system like Prednisone, and therefore does not have the nasty side effects that Prednisone does, nor is it as hard on the body.

Hope this helps and may you always remain a mild Crohnie case! :)
