Hi everybody,
Was just recently diagnosed with crohn's in Sept 2012 so Im new to this kind of thing and just had a few questions.
Like I said only recenty diagnosed in Sept. but have been having mild symptoms since I've been 21 (I'm 30 now). Only symptoms really were diarhea and I guess some cramping. (My GP had referred me to GI then because she was questioning some type of IBD but being young and dumb cancelled my app. for scopes and never went back and didn't mention it again until 2yrs ago). 2 1\2 yrs ago I had my gallbladder removed and have been having increased diarhea since then (maybe 10/day) tried questran and had trouble regulating with and stopped it. 7 mnths ago went on a diet ( increase veggie intake +++) and diarhea became out of control, like up to 20 a day, waking up at night and had to plan my life around availabe washrooms. so finaly went back to dr, had b/w done B12 low and esr was up, had upper GI with follow-through and was told then by the radiologist that i had crohns. quickly refered to GI had colonoscopy done the next week.
So it showed that i had crohn's in small bowel and TI i think, don't think it was that bad but he said it has been going on a while and needed to start treatment asap. so i was started on Imuran ( which I was tolerating well) for 3wks until I developed pancreatitis, was in hospital for 5days and was discharged home with some mild residual pain that i was told might last a while.
This was 1 wk ago and i still have some pancreas type pain i would describe it as mild, was finaly able to start eating couple of days ago and now have developed abd pain pretty generalized all over not just over pancreas, its very paifull at times, feeling very gassy bloated, trouble with what feels like constipation and then diarhea again, nausea at times...and also the pain goes into my back.
My question is: could this be crohns flare-up? never really delt with a flare-up so not sure what to expect.
PS i was started on entocort 9mg/day and he is planning on starting methotrexate in the next few weeks.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

just to confirm how long have you been on the Entocort? Were you on anything before the Imuran? It could be the tum is flaring a bit as the Imuran most probably would not have had enough time to fully kick in to settle things (it can take up to 12 weeks) so you are kind of starting from scratch again. When are you next due to see your doc? Are you able to get in touch with them easily to let them know about the symptoms you are now getting? Do they get worse with certain foods?

Hi thanks for replying. I've been on entocort for 1 wk now and wasnt really on anything before the Imuran because my only symptom was diarhea and the only reason I was put on Imuran was because it had gone to long without being treated. I think I had lots of scaring and chronic inflamation as per the biopsy. So I never realy had a flare up and not sure if my disease was active or not.
And its really any solid food at this point that is causing the pain. I have pain all night then start to feel better by the am and then starts again and gets worse throughout the day.
I'm seeing my GI on Nov.7. and no its not easy to get in to see, theres only 2 around my area and they cover a ot of patients.

The doc will be able to confirm when you see them if you have scarring for definite and the Entocort should be getting the inflammation down for you. It might be worth going onto a very low residue diet such as liquids and mushy food to help with symptoms for now whilst you wait for the appt. Another thing it may be worthing asking about is enteral nutrition - this has been shown to have a very good results in calming the tum down.

Hi Newbie and welcome to the community. It sounds like you're having a tough time of things right now, I'm so sorry :(

You mentioned the low vitamin B12 -- are you supplementing that?

I'd also suggest reading up on enteral nutrition prior to your appointment. It's a great treatment option that, if you're interested, may be worth talking to your doctor about to help you get in remission in conjunction with the methotrexate. I'm a big fan of the shotgun approach as it's so important to get the disease under control as soon as possible.

All my best to you.

yes I am supplementing my B12 and I can read up on enteral nutrition but don't think I would be at that point yet.
