Diagnosed in late '07. after severe canker sores (sometimes 10-15 at a time). rectal bleeding and perinatal abscess. went on asacol and had little success. had another flare up with more fistulas and went on 6MP. Still no success, January of '10 went in to the hospital with a temp. of 105.1 and had severe stomach cramps and horrendous gas. The doctors noticed that my colon wall was about an 1 1/2 thick. They removed it the next day. I am left with the stump of my rectum and about 3 inches left of my colon. I am still having some minor flare ups and my doctor is suggesting I have the rectum removed. Currently I am taking Humera 40mg injection every other week and will have to have a ileostomy bag for the rest of my life. I am seriously considering the surgery but am nervous about the potential complications. My wife and I still want to have more kids and even after we are done having kids I still want to lead a normal sex life. It's helpful to know there are people out there who are in a similar situation than myself.

When you had the surgery, did they know you'd have a permanent stoma? It seems like they would have removed it all at the time if they did. Admittedly, I know nothing about it. What are the potential complications?

How many kids do you have?

No, I the doctors thought that maybe after everything healed up they might be able to do a resection. I was told that I would have a tome for about 6 months. I am really thinking hard about not having it done because it can affect my sex life and it could severe some reproductive nerves. He said the nerves are almost invisible so it is very difficult to see/avoid them. I have 2 girls and I want to keep going until I get a boy!

I hear ya! Have the docs discussed alternatives ie. changing/adding different meds? Or are they resigned to the surgery?
