hello all,
I will be 55 yo in august. Back in 1988 I became very anemic and they ran some tests and found out I have a strictured ileum about 12cm long. They did a colonoscopy, most of colon was normal, could not get biopsy in upper colon, t-ileum because of being narrow.

put me on asulfazaline- broke out in bad rash so stopped. Was put on b-12 injections, which has worked great for me. For 23 years now I have taken no other meds, had no surgeries etc.

About once a year I get horrible upper gut pain... so bad you want someone to shoot you. For the first few years I went to er...given bentle or donnatal which did nothing... basically my symptoms they said were more like food poisoning, gastritis, etc. As no luck with the pain, I stopped going to er and just tough it out.

now that I am getting older, I don't have the umph to tolerate the pain.. last one was in march and I am in fear of the next one.

spoke with a gi dr this week, basically next time it happens he tells me to go to er and be more insistent.

first off... the pain comes in waves... is there something to stop it? I really just want a drug that will knock me out so when I wake up the Waves of pain will be past and gone.

When I go in, they say there is no apparent obstruction… so if no obstruction, please just knock me out and get rid of the pain.

#1 ? Is: is this pain normal for crohns, what do you all take for it?
#2 : diarrhea is getting worse, its really starting to interfere with activities. My D is not everyday, one or two days a week not able to leave the house. I seem to be able to sort of schedule it by not eating or drinking day before I need to leave the house etc. If I get all cleaned out, next day is safe for me to go out and about.

Do over the counter anti-diarrheas work… have been afraid to use them, with the stricture, would hate to get clogged up… but if it stops the diarrhea, maybe I should give them a try?

Anyways… I am open for any tips, advice, etc.

Thanks for listening.

For the D you can try taking a synthetic fiber supplement. It's important to distinguish between synthetic fiber and natural fiber here, the natural stuff could get digested by your body and cause the D to get worse whereas the synthetic fiber should 'bulk' it up and cause the D to not be as bad. Be careful with it though, if you try it out start off slow and see if it helps. You don't want to take too much.

I understand what you mean about the waves of pain. I get pains like that too. Its not all day long and its not constant. So i'm not sure what they could give me. I know heat helps me. Hot baths and heating pad. But my doctor perscribed me tramdol which i think is useless.

Is it a good idea to use a bulking agent with a stricture?? I've had strictures & have always been told extreme low fiber diet.
