Ok, so miss Piggy (my Stoma) has just turned 2. I really need to lose some weight! Just wondering if any of you have tried meal replacement shakes with a Stoma???
Just want to drop some weight so I can start feeling better about myself

Wouldn't work for me. Because of my stoma i have been ordered not to drink more than 2 litres in total per day - anything more than that and it just comes straight out of the stoma and can cause dehydration. I found this out the hard way by beibg hospitalised with dehydration last month. It's difficult to stick to 2 litres but just about manageable. Any shake would contribute to this limit, in fact could well take up the total volume limit.

If you want to lose weight in a safe and healthy way, stay away from the meal replacement products.

I'd suggest tracking your food intake (I use https://cronometer.com/) and then making decisions based on that.

Reducing fats and oils, processed foods and eating more whole foods is a very easy way to reduce calories while still satisfying your hunger and nutritional needs.

Then you should plan a workout routine to burn extra calories and to raise your metabolism. Just be careful about any heavy weight exercises until you speak with your surgeon. A hernia is the last thing you'd want.

Good luck!

I tried slim fast which is a meal replacement shake.it didn't work great I would get the shakes by the afternoon because I was so hungry but maybe tats just me!all it did to my stoma was made output more watery,as vegan ostomy says there's safer and healthier ways to lose weight.good luck :)

Almost 1 year since getting my stoma and I really need to loose about 3-4 stone, although I now think life is too short to fixate on weight (pre stoma I was depressed about being fat and have tried numerous 'fad' diets which didn't work, post stoma, when I was eventually allowed to eat - 6 weeks after surgery I couldn't and had to have NG feed). I have joined a gym doing small weights and Pilates and have started making better food choices, I have found almond milk shakes help with hunger pangs. Unsweetened almond milk, blitz with a banana or other fruit and a spoon of protein powder, instructions says 2 spoons but I was advised to have less just in case it was too much for what is left of my bowel. Hope this helps.
